Hi Steve! Most community discussions happen in Number Crunching (for the technically minded) or the Cafe SETI for general conversations.

Hope you feel right at home here on the boards! :)

Thanks for the info, think I'll check out the cafe first, will probably take a while to get my head round the technical stuff :)

By technically minded he means those of us that can't figure out how we broke it and need help getting it to work again. Any problems or just questions about what's going on should go to the numbers crunching forum. Just sitting around gossiping or just playing around is the Cafe.

I don't know how wet I am. This denial of service can be stop. place a web service on a different network. put your data base and numbers crucher on a network that does not allow polling. Now the web server will block traffic on your data base network because data network is hidden. Use the web server to recieve request for work then poll the web service to see who needs work and returned proceesed work. thus the important data network is not overwhelm.use a different router for data network then block all ports in coming thus your data network can do its work without being attack. Thus your data network is the only one that starts cummication with the out side.hope this helps. john

Message 1017498 - Posted: 19 Jul 2010, 4:55:25 UTC

Hi, I got a new computer and put boinc on it when I first got it. I've got 6 gigs of ram and 750 gig hard drive and a 1gig nvidia video card. I can process alot of information and fast with this setup, my only problem is the program constantly says I dont' have the power in my GPU to use my video card. In essence, I feel I am only using a very small amount of power because of this. Is there anything either upcomming upgrade, or maybe there's something I can do to my setup to correct this problem. I would love any help you could provide, thanks.

Stephen this is not the right forum for this type question. You can repost it in either the numbercrunching forum or in the question and answer section.

its too bad that seti@home has a stuck up attitude. I went to the seti@home convention, what did i get for all my years of computer processing and paying the fee to get in? I got treated like a second class citizen while the rich had private parties. Ill continue to donate my processing time, but i have no respect for your organization and how it treats the little guy. I went to the party that night and it was a bunch of children and a wet bar in the background?

IAC "Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias" is organizing for next year a brand new event called--->STARMUS.
This is located in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain.
The last update of this page shows that astronaut/captain Jim Lovell of Apollo XIII mission will be here as special guest.
This would be an unique chance to see and meet someone, a living legend of the Apollo missions, and have a small talk with him, if you are lucky.
I forgot to mention:
Jill Tarter will be there as well talking about--->SETI-Zone

What convention was this? Are you sure it was SETI@Home, or some other SETI group? Are you aware that there are dozens of other SETI groups that are not associated with SETI@Home?

The SETI Institute had a big to-do, SetiQuest, at NASA-Ames/Moffat Field, in the San Francisco Bay area, in September or October, I think. That might be the convention he went to, and was not treated well at.

If that's true, then those are all not SETI@Home related. I would hope that he doesn't hold it against SETI@Home for whatever project's convention he really went to. Those projects are not SETI@Home affiliated. His donated CPU time has not been going to those projects since they are not doing distributed computing.

That one, presumably. As you say, not Seti@Home affiliated.

I'm betting he is talking about SETICon.

SETICon was organized by SETI Institute which has nothing to do with SETI@Home. There was an exclusive event for people who have donated to SETI Institute, I believe. Is that what you are complaining about?

yes it was seticon, they had an invitation only party for the big wigs and an invitation only dinner 4 the big wigs, and some pathetic party for everyone else, where the entertainment was hokey and the demographic was to young and yes a wetbar in the back of the room. on a positive note the starparty was small out in the parking lot and that was good too bad it wasnt a roof party on top of the hotel. Its to bad i couldnt go to the dinner and the rich puke invitation only social gathering. But hey there better than all us lowly po people eh. Id settle for everybody having a party regardless of status. This one women seemed to think all the people who donate computer time were irrelevent. and all that mattered were the researchers and rich people that donated big money. And by the way they ran it, it definitely appeared that way. The only bigshot that was cool was that actor that played the part in voyager of the science officer, he actually hung out with all the normal people, the only person out of all those big wigs with any balls to act like a normal person.

I'm very sorry to hear you had a miserable time there, but do know that it had nothing to do with SETI@Home, so please don't hold that experience against the project or it's Admins.

Also, note that the "women" who seemed to think the people who donated their computer time were irrelevant - to her you are irrelevant because the SETI Institute does not have a distributed computing app, so they don't care. They don't work for SETI@Home but the SETI Institute.

Just from talking to the Project Admins here, I can tell you they would never treat someone like that. They are very nice people here.

What is wrong?

Numerous posts in the Q&A forum have asked this. The explanation has been on the front page and in the Technical News and News sections.
