The project collects its own data for processing. It does not accept signal data from users. See about section.

See Participate section to obtain software for crunching.

Hi Everybody,

I want to welcome you to the SETI@home staff weblog forum. (blog forum? Isn't that redundant?) My hope is that this forum will be a way for us to provide you with more information about what we are doing. We're a small enough staff that we don't have time to keep up with what's going on in the forums, and to some extent that has kept us from posting there. If we tried to answer every question, we would never be able to get any of the work behind SETI@home done.

The rules of this forum are:

  • Only SETI@home staff members and admins can start a thread. But anyone can reply. I can't guarantee that we'll have to time to actually turn these threads into conversations, but we'll try.
  • We're going to delete off topic responses here. But feel free start new threads in the other forums.
  • We'll be very strict on flaming and insults here.

But like most weblogs, I hope this will be about more than just "what I did this week." I'm going to try to post at least one new thread a week, and I'll encourage the rest of the staff to do the same. Some will be about SETI and other work, some will be about whatever it is we want to talk about.

Like all blogs, this will have a few opinion pieces. As opinions, please remember they belong to the person expressing them and aren't official positions of SETI@home or the Regents of the University of California. My opinions are mine alone. You may have opinions of your own that differ from mine. If so, you just need to understand that yours are wrong! (That was a joke by the way.)

Hopefully you'll get a better understanding of what we do, what our day-to-day lives are like, and how we are trying to improve SETI@home.

--
Eric

Hi all,
I agree with Olivier.

I have watched the graphics of the data being processed and often wonder what it is that I see. Ocassionally green tips occur that are probably 'triplets' but the rest seem to be random peaks and some normal distributions.

It would be great to know what is being found, no matter how trivial, what it may mean and can we expect Dr. WHO or ET to drop in soon (joke).

Please give consideration to providing 'regular' updates of our efforts.

regards Jim May

to whom this may concern:

First impressions after taking a break from crunching and having a background in the physics of radio wave propogation...I was wondering if there are "allowances" made for the increasing/decreasing harmonic sidebands of the stellar intake of the signals being received?

I was hopeing to submit for staff and community consideration a suggestion...

First on the home page and then as a "sticky" in one or more of the Help forums that the suggestion (advice) be given on how and why to delete old hosts from a users device list. Or merge Host records where the system has split records and is still active.

The project does not need to tie up disk space and resources keeping track of old retired hosts that never re-connect and will never send in more completed units.

Since removing an old host does not hurt the users total stats...(many Users are unaware of this) it is a positive and proactive thing to do.

Hi,I am completely agree with what you said.We make our computers 100% work for SETI@home,we do want to konw sth,sth about the project or sth about ET.
I can not stear that when you do sth with your intreste, but the reply is just silent.I just want someone who hold the project can give us more imformation. We will not leave the project when we heard "nothing has been found",actuly I do not except anthing been found untill more attention are paid by commen people and gorvenment, but SETI@home is a way.
I am from China, please forgive me about my poor English.By the way,can the web in Chinese be more "Chinese"?

Hi, concerning the language, i'm Dutch, no problem, except from a few errors?
By the way, how much time it takes, till a received signal, during 1 day, recorded, splitted and processed? [I take it, that, this is roughly, what is neccessary to get results

i been busy with transmittors [tubes/MOS_FT's]!,
amp 's [transistor/(MOS)FET/TUBES], nearly my hole life, now it is 'computers.
But that had more to do with my eyesite
I also heard transmissions have taken place, years ago, for the same purpose as
now, making 'alien intellegencies aware, there are more "beings".

It's also kinda [i]silly & NOT easy thing
, because were human, we 'think', the human way, by thinking off alien's .Maybe it 'only a few [i] molecules or some we don't know or understand at all, or in an other dimension, the fourth, f.i.?

It's confusing/b] and [b]very abstractso, difficult to imagine, what ' ít' could look like?! (^_^)

'scuse me, while i kiss the sky {Jimi Hendrix}

Can there be any good invitations/encouragements for seti members from different cultures and countries besides english speaking countries? Well it is clear anybody can post here but when people from non english speaking countries post here they make few grammatical mystakes and mostly you guys kind of ridicule them like asking to write correct english etc.

It's a good idea to have international forums. The hard part come in how to handle the flame wars that will eventually arise. I suppose we could require a volunteer to moderate before we open a board in each language. I'll add this to my internal suggestion box.

Hi Erik,
Greatings from Finland,
I think somebody in your family can speak Finnish ?? May there you can find help for Finnish boad.

due to continued poor performance of boinc, not following set options and the numerous times the seti site has not been contactable leaving both my computers sitting with nothing to do, once again i say go back to the old way, scrap boinc it a badly written ill maintained script that needs a total overhaul, hell set it to never use more than 80% cpu it still runs both at 100%. pull your fingers out and write it so it works properly, and seti, get set up so that pc's are not sitting idle.

BOINC was NOT written by the SETI group. There is a completely separate forum for BOINC. As far as PCs going idle; if you have one or more backup projects, that will almost never happen. If you insist on crunching only SETI, it is guaranteed to happen. On the main SETI page they state:
Keep your computer busy when SETI@home has no work - participate in other BOINC-based projects.

I believe that a post that's been idle for 60+ days is automatically locked.

Sticky threads may be an exception.

U.S. not prepared for possible asteroid strike, group says
On the 100th anniversary of the devastating Tunguska event in Siberia, scientists and an Orange County congressman urge the government to take further defensive measures against near-Earth objects.

Story goes on to mention Arecibo radio telescope not being funded.

Regarding the potential lack of funding of Arecibo, I hope everyone is sending letters or emails to their Congress persons to support the Senate bill. The U.S. cannot continue cutting all the forward investment in areas - science, education, etc. -that will be the basis for the ongoing competitiveness and future prosperity of this country. Public and private investment in science is critical to avoid continuing down the slippery slope... let alone being able to assure early warnings of and develop defensive measures against near-Earth objects.
