It certainly shouldn't, and it's sound practice to not run BOINC as root. I just run it as 'me' off my home directory - no problems. To err is human; to moo, bovine. |

Well I logged in and did everything as root(download, install). Installed into the /root directory and it works perfect now. I'm not sure what exactly did it - if it was the location it was installed to or the permissions given to the files but it works. hmmn, strange. I have 30+ linux machines running boinc. All but 2 run as non-root user and work fine. Non of those machines are Mandriva though. |

Bad.
I think not, but you can try it. |

Same problem with 5.8.3 and 5.2.13. Only 1 processor is detected and memory shows up as -4096 bytes physical and 0 bytes virtual. Could this be a problem with permissions? I am just running this from the /home directory of a user. Does anything need root permissions? |

Anyone know what user/group the boinc client and manager are supposed to be members of? Is is possible they don't have permissions to read the machine information? The hardware detection is programmed in C in the BOINC client. It could be, that this is also a kernel releated problem. But, englotk could you please try to install a alpha client (5.8.3) or a older stable (5.2.13 and/or 4.43) client and look if the problem happens again - only for testing.... The BOINC clients are here available : http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php |

I guess I only have 1 GB installed. Would have sworn it was 1.5 GB.
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 1011 908 103 0 128 594
-/+ buffers/cache: 185 825
Swap: 3992 0 3992

What's the output from 'free -m' ? Just now, on this 2GB box running SUSE 9.3 I get:
$> free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 2026 499 1527 0 56 277
-/+ buffers/cache: 165 1861
Swap: 1027 0 1027

I have looked on your computers list and your system was listed with 1 CPU and -0 MB memory. Looks like there is something wrong with the CPU and memory detection routine in the BOINC client. Which BOINC client version do you use ? How many memory is installed in your system ? |

They both show up like they should. processor : 0 and processor : 1. |

It sounds more like its your Mandriva that isn't detecting your hardware correctly rather than boinc. Open a command window and type cat /proc/cpuinfo how many CPUs does that show? |

Just installed Boinc on Mandriva 2007. Seti is running fine but boinc only detects 1 processor on a dual xeon machine. I checked the preferences and I have it set to allow 2 processors on one machine. Not sure if this is related or not but climate prediction gives me this error: "Message from server: Your computer has 61.04MB of memory, and a job requires 96.00MB" I actually have 1.5GB of ram. It doesn't seem to be able to detect my hardware properly. Even in my computer profile on the web the only thing that shows up is Linux2.6 no other hardware related info. Any ideas? Thanks. |
