I have Vista running on one machine that has BOINC running as well. Actually, it is mostly BOINC, not the applications that have the trouble. BOINC WIKI |

I have Vista running on one machine that has BOINC running as well. John -- The gating item, for me, is that the climateprediction.net staff seem to have been able to accomodate to VISTA (or else, "lucked out"). Don't think that the average participant should be expected to go through many gyrations in getting Seti (and Einstein, for me, which has a similar pblm.) to get installed correctly. When a VISTA-compatible version of BOINC is released for each application -- and, am assuming they have not -- will anticipate they will be able to be downloaded/installed automatically. A hat-tip to one, and all, in the VISTA endeavor. Wish I could offer a gem, or two, of my own. Cheers, Jim M. |

Both of the last two replies provide useful information. However, neither answer my core question. Will BOINC continue to lock up my computer under the DX10 environment? You will probably be the 1st person to try that, so you will have to let us know. I am not going to the DX10 environment based on what several magazin articles have said so far. Many, many do not work under it, so far. I will wait.

Hi, I ran Boinc on Vista Beta2 that I played around with a while ago. Boinc was installed as a service and I was using an optimized SETI application. It ran fine (with one exception), even when I was playing around with hefty games in Vista -- such as Microsoft Flight Simulator X. The exception was that when I switched the SETI preference between "run always" and "run only when user is inactive", it wouldn't take. It wouldn't take whether changing the venue it was on or to another venue all together. So, when I was playing around with hefty software in Vista, I had to always put Boinc on snooze. Never bothered to root down the cause, but I'm sure it was Vista thing. I didn't experience any lockups or anything with Boinc/SETI in Vista. It ran fine. RAC was comparable with XP Pro. (Computer it was running on was a dual.) As for Vista, Aero Glass was neat for about ten minutes, before the live minimized "previews" and Flip 3D started getting old. Other than that, all Aero Glass really gives you is just translucent windows borders. Worth the extra GPU cycles? *shrug* Side bar seemed pretty gimmicky to me, but there weren't many widgets for it yet. Eventually, it'll be useful, I guess. I did like the new start menu. It was, at least to me, more intuitive. A lot of things also had a very "KDE'ish" feel to them. No surprise. What I really didn't like was some of the new security features. With Beta2, I found them to be very annoying and more complicated than need be. Vista, at least Beta2, trusts itself more than it does the "admin" user -- which I felt as being very dangerous. Power users will probably disable them all together, while malware will probably take advantage of them to prevent novice users from fixing their own computers... Just my impression. I'm in no hurry for Vista... |

I have Vista running on one machine that has BOINC running as well. The default install will cause problems. Choices: 1) Install into a different directory as all user accounts (including the administrator group) require an manual permissions step before writing to the Program Files directory tree. 2) Install as a service and use the local system account (has to be done in the control panel midway through the BOINC install). 3) Disable UAC in Vista. I've seen several threads on the Number crunching forum. I suggest doing a Seti forum search with the key word Vista too pull up some of those threads. Don't worry, there's an alternative which I also use when running the most demanding games in my machine. Since your computers are hidden I can really tell which BOINC version you're running, but if you right-click the BOINC icon in the notification area there should be an "Snooze" option. This will preempt all running and stop net activity for an hour. If I'm not mistaken this option was implemented in version 5.4.11, so if you don't have it, just upgrade your BOINC installation. Regards, Wander |

I've seen several threads on the Number crunching forum. I suggest doing a Seti forum search with the key word Vista too pull up some of those threads. Thanks mikey. Here's the deal, I use my computer mainly as a game rig. As it is now, if I want to run a game, I have to suspend BOINC or it will lock up the computer. As per my other post about my machine locking up, I have BOINC now set up to not run the screen saver. What I'm finding is that if I don't suspend BOINC, I get a lock up. If I do suspend BOINC, I may forget to re-enable it after I'm done. The first case is unacceptable and the second is counter-productive. My point is all of this is to help me decide if there is a way for me to not resort to abandoning BOINC and thus Seti@home all together. I thing this is a worth while endevor, but don't feel so strongly about it that i'm willing to put up with the hassle. IF, I get windows Vista, will I be able to allow BOINC to run in the background with no lock up when I load up my current favorite game? If I can't, I'm afraid BOINC and SAH will have to get along without my help. |

I've seen several threads on the Number crunching forum. I suggest doing a Seti forum search with the key word Vista too pull up some of those threads. Boinc runs fine on Beta Vista as long as it gets installed as a Service. Which to most people is not an issue. I personally have not loaded the released version of Vista yet, so can't answer that part. Also I do not use the screen saver, AT ALL! It slows down processing times.

I've seen several threads on the Number crunching forum. I suggest doing a Seti forum search with the key word Vista too pull up some of those threads. Checked every thread there. None of them really address how Vista will handle BOINC and what (since I can't find an explination why BOINC don't like 3D) BOINC will do with DX10. |

As I understand it, BOINC doesn't like 3D screen savers. I can only assume that it has a problem with Directx. I know that it will lock up my high-graphics games if I leave it to run in the background. I'm considering upgrading to Vista when it comes out to take advantage of Directx 10. I'm wondering if BOINC will run at all on that OS. Will it have the same problem with DX10? Does anyone know? I felt this post would have been more appropriate on the BOINC forum, but I can't log in to post there, guess my seti@home log in don't work for that page. Anyway, I was just wondering. |
