Well, I sent an email to someone. But I had sent it to a local writer. Here's his response.

thanks, al.
i read the thread. interesting series of events... if one end of the transaction were here (instead of minneapolis or denver), we'd want to work the story. its best hope for making our pages is probably bob dyer's column or betty's consumer column. but without a local connection, i doubt they could use it.
if you haven't sent it their way yet, i'll be happy to.

I'm going to send it to Bob Dyer & Betty's consumer column. I'm going to keep trying. This IS an interesting story, but it was my mistake for sending it to a local editor. I'm still working this. If the Beacon doesn't want this, I'm sending it to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. (Our arch rival!) But I would rather the Beacon gets it first.

edit - UPDATE - Just spoke w/ David @ Berkeley (in the event they are talking directly to me @ ABC - David explained what i should say . . .)

just received a call from COX Network (based in Atlanta, GA) - Fred Ryder News

Desk - asked about the Project (SETI) and has 'no previous knowledge' of SETI

so - long story short - he's passing this onto the Local Reporters in

Charlotte (ABC Network Affiliates), w/ my name & number (even though i gave

him David Anderson's No. @ Berkeley - HOPEFULLY they'll find it of Interest

enough to call David in CA. In the Event they do get back to me - which they

said they would - i will need an 'Official Report' from Berkeley . . .

Suggestions . . .

When I asked this Mitch for someone in National news that maybe interested in this. He responded:
________________________________________________

good try... though we don't have reporters on our national desk. our national stories come from the wires, so if AP or a big city paper gets a story out of it, our national editor or business editor might choose to run it...
now more than ever, we have to make sure our local reporters are working on local stories. sorry i can't offer a better solution...

It's complicated. Ever since Knight-Ridder went face down & sold to the highest bidder, we have been focusing on different things. We have been trying to put on more of a local face.

I will try more with The Cleveland Plain Dealer.

I gave a summary to the technical correspondent of my local ABC station. He forwarded on to Admiral's ABC affiliate.

Hello "nobody"..here is another thought on publicity.
Dr Jill Tarter, Director, Center for SETI Research is currently embarked on a North American lecture tour. I am not sure how closely she might be affiliated with SETI@Home and the Berkeley folks, but wouldn't it be cool if she could add a small anecdote to her presentations ie '"Laptop calls Home" as part of SETI search, and is rescued.'

The good Dr. will be presenting in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada at the Perimeter Institute in early March 2007. Waterloo is the tech research centre of Canada (silicon valley of the north) and consequently 'tons of computer'here. Just image the exposure and potential BOINC recruits that might be found if she were to mention the 'benefits' of crunching for SETI@Home..ie if you loose your laptop, it could be found again if crunching with BOINC. I'm sure she would at least get a kick out of the whole story.

I plan on attending her lecture when it comes to town here next month, and I invite all fellow SETI@Home crunchers to also attend if in the Waterloo area. If anybody needs details, just ask me or email me via my site profile. The lecture is free but tickets are required.

'ello dragon - i've sent Dr. Tartan a 'brief' and the LInks to this Threads and the other Thread pertaining to said matter . . . E-Mail response is expected within a few days . . . good idea btw . . . i think that the more others get involved (in these matters) the better for the Project and SETI in general . . . a great contribution / idea . . . and more is requested of all those @ SETI / BOINC . . . this Project shall succeed and make History in itself . . . and that shall be sooner than later . . .

These are good ideas!

But I think everybody should remind themselves (and others too) that SETI@Home has already made history, it has been in the Guinness Book Of Records, and has taken Distributed Computing up a notch or two - making it a completely feasible form of readily available supercomputing power!

I'll repeat that last statement for emphasis:

SETI@Home has helped develop a completely feasible form of readily available supercomputing power!

I think this is awesome in and of itself.

Thanks to us, the volunteers!

I don't know about anybody else, but I feel proud to have been a small part in such a great endeavour, that can potentially provide so much benefit to human society as a whole.

If this doesn't add to the newsworthiness of any article in the press about Admiral's laptop, I don't know what will.

@ kinhull - i should 'ave added SETI will again . . . and the

Newsworthiness should be apparent to the Media and all others Concerned

< The Benefits to Society (as a Whole) is a Potential that should make for

Headlines too - hopefully (one day SOON), Society will place 'Emphasis' on

more important Issues (such as SETI / BOINC) and forget their penchants and

desires for other matters, of less Interest to Humananity . . .

Worth remembering that 95% of the develloped world, lets say Europe and America being the most internet connected areas, have never heard of seti@home. And don't know what it is ?

And 99.5% have never heard of BOINC

John, you're forgetting that China will soon overtake the USA as internet surfers. There's a few of them crunching here, but why should the rest be? What's our sales pitch?

SETI/BOINC is its own sales pitch, it just needs to be advertised.

Hey there folks,

I posted this on movie forum (lots of computer junkies there)and after catching up on this thread I thought you all might be interested, I hope I got my facts right.

Your World Needs You.....And Your Computer!!

BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing) is a free download. It utilizes your CPU's idle time to "crunch" numbers for scientists conducting research in all kinds of fields.

BOINC is related to SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) but these days it does so much more than just listening for aliens!! Cancer, Malaria and AIDS research aswell as many other projects being conducted by Universities and Labs. If you have the time (it's quicker to download and install than most music files), it is a great thing to get your comp to do in the background while you surf. I have it running full time and it doesn't slow my comp down at all, and I have the "warm fuzzy" feeling that this expensive box is helping the world and doing more than just goofing around!

Please consider BOINC, your world needs you!

Related links:

Seti@Home Listenin' fer aliens!
Rosetta@Home Research into many diseases.
MalariaControl Researching Malaria in Africa.
Climate prediction Researching weather patterns and where we are headed.

I needed help with BitTorrent and got it here at TorrentPortal. You helped me and I hope these links will help you help the planet.

There is so much more I could tell you but part of the fun of the internet is searching out things for yourself. If you have questions or concerns, post them here. I'm no computer guru, but I'm good at getting answers!

I think that if we want to spread the word and get people interested, we need to let them know BOINC is more than just "Listen' fer Aliens".

OK I'll be quiet again.
