You may also want to change to preferences associated to that laptop to
Connect to network about every .25 days. Yes 0.25 that way it might contact seti@home more often and give you more "here I am" reports to make it easier to find the person(s).

I am not sure that I can do that as I don't think it's set up to be administered remotely for seti. If you have a clue mallet to smack with so I can know HOW to do that, I will certainly try. It was network always available and run always last I* touched it.

Try to change it here:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/prefs_edit.php?subset=global
Connect to network about every
(determines size of work cache; maximum 10 days)

Set it to something very low, like 0.01 - it should connect after every workunit. The client will update its prefs on its next contact after the change.

Ah, Account settings and

General preferences
specify when and how BOINC uses your computer

probably?

Just wondering because I have a value of 0.1 there...

Also set the Disconnect when done? to NO. Maybe it can be traced with an active open connection.

You know Laptop manufactures could add a GPS chip really cheap and market some form of tracker as a selling/ theft prevention device. Plus think of all the map software that would work easily.

The wheels of justice turn slowly, however they do turn.
There was a subpeona issued for qwest to provide the information related to the time and IP address of the first two accesses. So that is in progress.

8 days had passed and there was no peep. I figured they must have finally re-imaged the thing. Lo and behold, a third contact was made this morning (6 am local time).

So, the cybersleuth at the minneapolis police department has that information and things are moving. Albeit slowly.

I'll keep you informed.

Eric K - the information you gave me for contact info has been passed on. Much thanks.

I suspect that whoever stole it either sold it or gave it to their friends
and that is who has been using it.

The very idea that they haven't imaged it shows they're not really very
smart people.

If PC Anywhere or Dameware had been on the thing it would have been
interesting to remote in to see who or what they were using it for.

When Admiral M gets back from California I've also got some ideas I want
to run by him regarding frequency of access.

Message 507882 - Posted: 24 Jan 2007, 5:06:16 UTC - in response to Message 507251.

I have some very good news.

The stolen laptop has been recovered by the Minneapolis police department!

The first to incidents of contact were enough to get a subpeona from Qwest. The third incident was added to that subpeona, and the IP address was trace to the same customer all three times. These IP addresses were provided by the Seti@home project page for my account.

Monday, the police got the written reports from Qwest Communications and a judge issued a search warrant.

The people that used the laptop were not home, however the baby sitter insisted that the laptop has been in their posession for at least a year. The police are now going to determine the relationship of the people who had the laptop to the case, if they stole it, if they bought it from someone, etc. There will be people in trouble for a minimum of lying to the police, receiving stolen goods, and with luck, breaking and entering.

The serial number had been scratched off but one of the logon names that was on the XP logon screen was a name that had been mentioned in the documentation provided to the police, and that was enough for them to seize the laptop.

Further investigation revealed that with strong light, the right angle and a magnifying glass, the serial number could be read. It matched the service records for the lap-top as provided by Micro Center.

I got a call on my cell phone in Southern California where I am writing this message, earlier this afternoon and got all of this information. The laptop is in the evidence and property room at the Minneapolis Police Headquarters, waiting for me to come get it when I get back form California. The Minneapolis Police HQ is directly across the railroad tracks from my office, and is connected to my building by tunnel. I don't even have to put on a jacket to get this thing back from them!

Long and short of it is this: Without being involved with the Seti@home project, this laptop would never have been recovered. My wife's writing, (Screenplays, novels, correspondence and other things that are irreplaceable and therefore priceless) Without the assistance of my fellow project members, I would not have known about the ability to track the IP address of a computer. So for all of you that have been so generous with your time and so supportive of this quest, I thank you deeply and truly.

The internet is truly an amazing thing, and my fellow searchers are some of the coolest and best people I could possibly hope to count among my friends.

Thank you so very much

Sincerely

Admiral Marith.

Rough Draft for a possible press release?

Searching for Aliens Nets Thieves

An author who volunteered her computer's spare processing power to aid in the search for aliens, was rewarded with the recovery of her stolen laptop.

Mary Joan Smith, a novelist and playright had her laptop stolen on ....,2007. Unknown to the thieves, her Seti@home program was running in the background, aiding UCBerkeley scientists in their search for alien transmissions. Like ET, the laptop kept calling home to Seti@home to receive more processing work. Also unknown to the thieves, the laptop continued to send out it's new IP address through their service provider, Qwest Communications.

Faced with the tragic loss of manuscripts for plays and novels stored on the laptop, Miss Smith appealed to her fellow volunteers on the Seti@home forums, who quickly advised her how to track the laptop's new geographical location as the Minneapolis area and to identify the new internet service provider. This in turn, aided the police in getting a subpoena directed to QWest Communications, requiring the company to reveal the name and address of the new laptop user. A search warrant was executed at the home of the thieves and the laptop was found and seized there.

"I'm just thrilled to have my work returned to me unharmed, said Mary Joan, "It wouldn't have happened without all my wonderful friends at Seti@home."

Seti@home is one of the many projects known as distributed computing, whereby individuals help scientists by volunteering part of their own processing power to help in the voluminous processing burden of such projects by each doing tiny parts of the overall computational task, etc...
