" . . . to intelligently assess the probability"

“... absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.” [Rees]

" . . . that the number of civilizations in the galaxy that is capable and desirous of
communicating with others is the product of a rate of birth r times a lifetime L"

[N] = the number of coexisting, operationally intelligent, civilizations in the galaxy
[R'] < the rate of formation of Sun-like stars in the galaxy
[L] < the lifetime of the intelligent civilization
[Drake]

*IF* there is an obvious 'lack of evidence' - after a committed and exhaustive search
for an ETI . . .

Regarding "after a committed and exhaustive search" - who amongst us - has the
intelligence to assess the probability - that the 'search' may well continue well past
our children's children and so forth = without ever coming upon an "evidence" . . .

Though this may be 'true' - that we, nor our children will "discover" the ETI . . .

Truth be known - this is a beginning and one that is well worth the 'time and energy'
spent in regards to a search - in itself - one that we each can feel a pride in - being
@ the "birth" of the Project - and carrying on - without defeat, the idea of committment
and energy required - and without any expectations - safe the 'search' in itself being our
common denominator.

Mainly on the Plain?

Rainfall varies all over the Iberian peninsula
and its plains. Sometimes the plains get more rain, sometimes the
Meseta Central does (depends upon 'which' plains). Also, one can choose
to define "rain" to be annual rainfall for a region, or total amount
of water falling in a geographical area. In fact, depending upon what
variable you wish to use, you can make the statement "the rain in
Spain falls mainly on the plain" be either true or false! Just choose
your data for a given area, or time period.

Precipitation in UK goes mainly down the drain

Ha ha! or into overflowing water butts which is totally useless while we still have a hosepipe ban here is Surrey.

By Seth Shostak . . . "When Does SETI Throw in the Towel?"

==============================================
> 18 January 2007 - When Does SETI Throw in the Towel?
==============================================

. . .Excerpts

“At what point would you abandon the search?”

It’s a simple truth, although one not universally acknowledged, that SETI is still in its early stages.

Consequently, many of its practitioners will tell you that this is a multigenerational experiment, akin to building

cathedrals in medieval Europe. In other words, a lot of SETI scientists will answer the question that began this

article by saying “not in my lifetime, nor in that of my children or grandchildren.”

Indeed, my personal feeling is that if SETI hasn’t turned up something by the second half of this century,

we should reconsider our search strategy, rather than assume that we’ve failed because there is nothing–or no one–to find.

Would I ever conclude that we’ve searched enough? Would I ever truly give up on SETI’s bedrock premise, and tell

myself that the extraterrestrials simply aren’t out there? Not likely.
That would be to assume that we’ve learned

all there is to know about our universe, a stance that is contrary to the spirit of explorers and scientists alike.

We might yearn, or even need to believe that we are special, but to conclude that Homo sapiens is the best the cosmos

has to offer is egregious self-adulation.

We are looking through telescopes. We are listening by analyzing radio telescope data. We are trying.

Once we give up one of those three things we have become vegetables.

Everyone missed wishing Janis a Happy Birthday!

I'm sure they could add belated birthday wishes, if they wanted. She was a fantastic singer and is sorely missed.

GO Patriots!

Heh. Even though I've got my money on the Colts, I won't feel bad if the Pats win tomorrow. They're a great football team, and if they win tomorrow I'll be cheering for them at the Superbowl. :)
