Simon I see you have an Escort, make sure you change the Timing Belt when it comes time! My brother in law had an Escort and did not change his. It cost him $1400.00US to have the engine rebuilt when it broke!!!!

The engine had a complete stripdown and clean 6 months ago, it really was lacking power, the rolling road said 21bhp (should be around 50). Turned out my uncle had been running it on unleaded but hadn't changed the head, so the valve seats had been worn away. So it had a new head fitted and the other parts cleaned so it runs sweet as a nut now. Though don't know if they changed the timing belt, i'll check with them tomorrow.
Since its been gas converted (thats lpg, autogas, propane, don't know what you call it in the US) it works even better than it did on petrol. Now it never needs any petrol at all.

That's good to hear, I HOPE they did the timing belt, with all that other work it had to come off anyway. We call it lpg or propane here in the US.
Does it get better mileage than when it ran on gasoline? Is this fuel cheaper than gasoline?

Yep, after some wrangling I managed to get £400 out of his insurers, and the garage charged me exactly that to fix it. Thats 'new' bumper, lights, tailgate and rear panel. They got them second hand so that kept the price down.
