I just made the change to Alex Kan's app for my Mac Pro and my old G4 733 Quicksilver and have so far seen a 60% boost on the G4 and a 40% or so boost on the Mac Pro...YES it is very ok to change to an optimized app...turn your computer loose and see what it's truly capable of. I've been watching my RAC climb over the last 24 or so hours and I'm up about 600 RAC on the Mac Pro and still climbing...I'll take that any day!!!

Likewise, but you should know that Santa frowns upon posters with such long signatures.

Is this OK?

SETI has always maintained that their software is an Open Source, and allows it to be optimized by others. They have used some of the optimizations that have been presented to them, but they only have a small amount of people programming so doing specific optimizations are impossible to test for lack of time, hardware, money, etc. As also shown sometimes the highest optimization is not always the best. Some SSE3 machines do better with SSE2 optimization. Since it takes time to test to see which one works best, for whatever machine, it is easier to allow volunteers to do that.

I'm no expert - best ask Chicken - but I think the reason the main application isn't optimised is because it is designed to work across all platforms and chipsets.

It's fine to optimise - an it massively improves the efficiency of your work turnaround. Best place to find the right app for you is in th Sticky Thread at the top of this forum. I'm not sure if the 64-bit apps are available, but if they are, they'll be in there.

Merry Christmas!

Steve.

It it OK to use optimized SETI@home applications? Why doesn't the official application use the best optimizations? Where can I find 64-bit Pentium D 920/SSE3-optimized SETI@home application for Windows XP Professional x64?
