Hi Diego,
almost all test results I saw using Core Solo/Duo chips favoured the SSE2-PM versions, mainly because they are specially tailored to those chips' shorter pipeline IMO.

Still, the SSE3 version was never far behind, and sometimes just as fast, so it's not that much of a difference.

*Nod*. That's why when the discussion was everywhere in the boards some people were asking "why compile a SSE3 version at all?"
I don't remember what the consensus was, though. ;)

I'd recommend not doing performance tests for a long period of time, because any gains you may get from switching to an app performing 2% better will be offset by the time it can't crunch ;o)

Hehe, exactly. I stopped doing sse2 vs sse3 tests long ago, and I went with the sse3 just because I could, even if I lost a few seconds. Yeah I'm funny that way. :P

Hi folks, lame question, but which optimised Chicken app should I use for a laptop with a Centrino Duo that supports SSE3?

The ones in the above thread seem to be Pentium D etc ... should I use that one?
Thanks, Steve.

Yes, use the Intel SSE3 app. /later

Did you test this with Chicken's app? I have a machine that can use SSE3 and Chicken's app tested that the SSE2 was actually a faster cruncher.

Yes I've tested and the results varied, but on average the difference was of just a few seconds, sometimes sse2 won, and some times sse3 won. So I stuck with sse3 both for a celeron and the P4.
I think I read Simon a while back, saying something about going for the sse3 app. if your chip supported it.

I can test it again nowadays with a Pentium D and simon's 2.0 app.
I think I'll do that first thing on Tuesday.

The site recommends the SSE2 P-M version for Core Solo/Duo chips, even though the chips do support SSE3.

Same here, specifically this one "SSE2-Intel P-M optimized Windows S@H app"

I have a Centrino Duo which uses a Yonah chip, and you can use the SSE3 optimised chicken app.

If you're unsure which of Chicken's apps to use, I would advise that you download his Automatic installer - Full package (Rev 2.0) No graphics and let it run its tests, it will then recommend the app that works best on your machine.

Further info ... the chip's a "Yonah" apparently. Although CPU-Z isn't happy running on this machine.

Thanks,

Steve.
