If you can not pay for gas how can you drive your car? If you can not pay for bread how can you feed your family? It goes on...

That's a pretty pitiful attempt at justifying the negligence on part of the SETI@Home crew.

If you can't afford the gas, then why do you have car anyway? So it will look pretty sitting in your driveway like the SETI screensaver I used to see when my crunching power was being wasted?

I think you forget that you are talking to someone that has put their life and soul into this Project. That means that this is their 'baby'. To ask them to give up some control of the data is akin to me asking you to let me drive your Porsche or Ferrari, and you not knowing if I even have a valid drivers license.

It's equally absurd to expect donations for a project that doesn't work and doesn't have plans set in stone to make it work.

After all, would you cover all of the expenses on your friends Porsche or Ferrari if you were never allowed to drive it?

I wouldn't have said "equally".

Obviously you just got back from somewhere to go that far down to bring up something was already hashed out.

It would imply that you are attempting to start trouble not provide constructive discussion.

BrainSmashR, with Eric visiting the boards and responding to issues we have the chance to discuss with them and give some input. Still an "outsider" will never know all the details and needs of someone working in some place and people need to keep that in mind. It's probably the same at your work - it for sure was at mine when I was working for a games publisher. As a gamer myself I was really disappointed to realize what mechanics go on behind the glittering facade. But you could not even tell people the bitter truth due to marketing reasons :p

Still different points of view might help - so I am asking you what you suggest.

I have read the majority of this thread, and it seems that some, without mentioning names, seem to have taken things a little personal. I would suggest everyone step back and remember that everyones financial position is different, and with the way in which we are able to donate being a serious bone of contention, there is little point arguing as it achieves little..except high blood pressure.

Some that want everyone to donate cash seem to have forgotten that evryone who takes part in the project in a serious way already donates, time, money and hardware to the project. Computers use electricity, it is not free, hardware costs money, and time is also not free.

Now I am aware that this situation does not help Eric and the rest of the team manage the project, they do need cash, but lets not slag-off those who, for one reason or another, find themselves unable to make monitary donations.

Lets not forget, that at the moment, the majority of the SETI users are likely UNAWARE of the seriousness of the financial situation of the project. I would agree that communication is king, and the only people with access to all the email addresses of all participants are Eric and the team. The onus (sorry Eric) is on Eric and the teram to email everyone with a breakdown of the financials, and state the FACTS as they stand, then ask everyone if they can donate whatever is possible, either via the normal way, or by simply sending cash through the post to the Team in Berkelely. Christ, if 10% of users sent in $1 then the vast majority of the problem would be solved.

Solving the financials is not rocket science, but it does take work. Here in the UK I am not in too much of a position to be of help to the team, but many in the US, especially California, are likely in a position to contribute time to help in Corporate fundraising..within the Users of SETI there MUST be some who have experience of this that can aid and assist, even if only via email/phone.

I have been doing SETI (except for a short layoff due to personal circumstances) for almost the full 7 years of the project, I do not want to see it end anytime soom. However I do understand the frustrations of those who wish to see real science data emerge from the mammoth efforts of the users, but it is a chicken and egg situation. Again, perhaps some could actually help the team compile this data for uploading to the website, or simply take the task on part time..some information is better than none.

I don't want SETI@home to end any time soon (not until after we find an ETI), but what is the plan moving forward? If we knew this then it would be easier to market the project....

Live long and BOINC.

Hey, I understand perfectly. I don't expect all the problems to be hammered out over night.....give us a time frame.

Considering how long the project has been "broken", I really don't see this as being an unreasonable request.

I want to Thank Everyone that bought up items that may not have been obvious, to that extent the thread was very sucessful. Eric has seen what you have said. For the most part it allowed many to say things and receive a bit of information back.

At this point it has degenerated into one individual, who has some axe to grind and no longer useful.

Thank You for Your Input

Regards Pappa
