Well, I just found another neat way to reduce the heat output. Went to an optimized app. Sorry, but that does not compute! Illogical!! The optimised apps should be causing the CPU to generate near maximum heat output. Those apps exercise more of the CPU electronics more consistently, hence more switching transistors to get more computations done. You may also get more computions done by also using those transistor switchings more effectively and/or less wastefully. Interesting Posts everyone. I've learned a bit from this one. Christopher.

Now, who knows the difference between affect. an effect, infect, and affection? *raises his hand* ...or their, there and they're - tera/terra - who's/whose and other such words... effect - noun or transitive verb, verb meaning to successfully bring about or to accomplish something (he effected the signing of the treaty through the use of force), noun as in "cause and effect". affect - noun or verb, verb meaning to have an influence on something, noun meaning the influence of something (his actions affected the outcome of the treaty). affection - noun meaning personal attachment or like of something or someone (his affection for spirits caused his aggressive behaviour). infect - transitive verb meaning to contaminate with something bacterial or viral causing a disease or, figuratively, a disease-like reaction (infectious laughter). ;o)
Like ML1 posted, this may slow your crunch times down if your cooling solution is less than adequate. Experiment ;o) A good aftermarket cooler can really help a lot. HTH, Simon. Donate to SETI@Home via PayPal! Optimized SETI@Home apps + Information |

That explains it nicely. I would describe it not as "combating" the heat, but rather as reducing heat generation to avoid or ameliorate excessive temperature. To "combat the heat" suggests that you install some effective cooling hardware in there to actively remove the heat in the first place! Note that a penalty of the "CPUSpeed" stuff is that the processing is slowed down... Now, who knows the difference between affect. an effect, infect, and affection? Ok, I did some more research, and can now answer the question asked. The i586 kernel module set does not contain the CPUSpeed module. Most P4 chips will use the CPU speed module to slow themselves down a bit when they get real hot. If the module is not there (it's not in the i586 kernel builds), under heavy load the chip won't have cpuspeed to slow itself down a bit to combat the heat... |

Not sure of the exact reason myself. However, It's all over the FC6 BugTrack, and I was a victim of the bug myself. When I went to the correct kernel, I noticed a 5 degree C drop in CPU temp while crunching... |

... loads the wrong kernel for some CPU's resulting in abnormally high CPU temperatures under heavy load. Check your kernels. Make sure you are not running the i586 kernel on an i686 processor... How come the claim for "abnormally high CPU temperatures"? There should be no problem whatsoever with running i586 compiled code vs i686 compiled code. Explain? Just a heads up for those of us out there that are running Seti on FC 6... Anaconda mistakenly loads the wrong kernel for some CPU's resulting in abnormally high CPU temperatures under heavy load. Check your kernels. Make sure you are not running the i586 kernel on an i686 processor. If you are, check out Fedora's bug track page to see how to unload and install the CORRECT kernel.... That's all for now. Happy crunching... |
