Hello russell33,

I am no programer but I think I have some hints...
I assume you are using the standard client for seti, because I have not found any optimized seti client hints and you are running the client in screen saver mode.

If so I would prefere another "config":
1. download the newest "chicken" optimized seti app from lunatics.at
2. do not use the screen saver mode, because graphics needs much time

Another hint is the quota per day , it is "only" 99 (because of the client errors), what is sometimes a hint for a defective memory module or something like that...

hope to give you some ideas..

greetings

Bernd

I've had a bunch of copute errors lately. First I've had in a while. I didn't worry to much about them, the ones I checked on seemed to be erroring out for everybody. They may be unconnected with yours though.

Two Computation errors in the past two days. One of them is the following which had computed for 2 hours and 12 minutes. The completion time was going to be 6 hours and 9 minutes.

A possible answer to the seemingly rash of problem units lately,
This is from the Technical News a week or so ago:
"The last of the known never-touched classic data tapes has been read last week and is in the splitter queue. Next we will start reading tapes that have gone through the pipeline in some form or another, but for some reason never made it into our master database. Possible reasons include: bad data (but hopefully not), a tape drive failure that caused the tapes to remain unread (surprisingly more common than you'd think), poor initial analysis or database corruption leading to failure during redundancy checking. So don't be upset when tapes from the late 90's appear on the queue. Data from 1998 is worth the same as data taken in 2006. The ETs we are looking for come from light years away. A few years won't make any difference when looking for signals consistently repeating over time."

Hello people.

I'm getting some errors on my PC too.
It's http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=1955611
that causes trouble. Just check the results on page 2 and you'll see what I mean.

I'm using Chicken's app:
Version: Windows SSE2 32-bit 'Ni!' based on seti V5.15 'Chicken Good!'
Rev: (R-2.0|QxW|FFT:IPP_SSE2|Ben-Joe)
CPUID: 'AMD K8 Athlon 64 (Venice)'

Had no trouble when I switched over but all of a sudden something's messing up the WU's. Any suggestion what might have caused those problems?

Oh, sorry for not posting the log, but I can't access that PC at the moment. It's at home and I had somebody to shut it down but forgot to remind her of copying the log into a .txt before doing so.

I also don't know if a simple reboot would solve the issue, but I have no way to test that until Thursday since no one is at home for the next few days. :\\ I would be glad if someone had advice. I searched the Boinc Wiki but didn't come up with any good.

This is an error that has been associated with a video card driver in the past. Check and see if you have the newest ones, also if you are a Windows user, update your DirectX files. DirectX is updated every few months by MS.

I actually updated my video driver and DirectX last Friday in order to be able to play Armed Assault with some nice graphics and I/Seti was doing fine with it until I left on Sunday. I'll check it out on Thursday and will let you know if it helped.

I'm new to the "enhanced SETI" software. Of my last 20 tasks, 18 have failed due to compute errors. I'm running an older P4 1.3ghz 128meg ram. Other than having a weak PC, any thoughts? I never had this problem with Classic SETI. Here are a couple of the logs:

Hi loadingzone,

well, it hard to tell what exactly happens with your computer there, since the results errored out after between some minutes and some hours of run time. The exit code you receive can also be read a "Illegal function call", which is the "standard" error message Windows generates, if the circumstances of an error can not be better resolved.

I would suggest to run it without the screen saver for a day or two (change the screen saver to something else, e.g. "Blank Screen"), since this is the most common reason for "unresolvable errors".

Running XP on a 128MB RAM system may be leaving less than enhanced needs. BOINC reports it as having 127.48 MB so setiathome_enhanced thinks there's plenty and will use about 67 MB without graphics, another 10 or 12 MB with graphics on. BOINC itself of course uses some memory too, but generally less than 5 MB even with BOINC Manager running. My Win95 system with the same amount of memory has about 20 MB free when BOINC and S@H are running, but I hear that XP uses more memory than 95.

The one "success" result currently shown for your system was a -9 overflow at less than 11 minutes of run time, S@H may not have reached its full memory usage at that point.

This is just a possibility to think about. If you have some additional background tasks running or such you might try shutting down as many as you can do without.

I've been running SETI on an IBM 380Z (PII 300) notebook for months. It may be my only PC to never have a compute error. It's running XP Pro, has a 4GB disk, and 96MB RAM. It takes about 48 hours to do a standard WU, but it gets the job done.

But it does nothing but SETI and AVG virus updates.

That pretty well eliminates the memory needs of XP. And I checked S@H memory use on my P4 1.6 GHz system, it reached full 67 MB usage within 3.5 minutes after a start, so my guess on the reason the noisy one completed was bad too. I hope some of the other ideas will be more help.

Just an off topic note about XP RAM usage, for general knowledge:

XP will actually adjust it's own memory usage depending on how much RAM is installed in the system. Obviously, the more system RAM, the better XP performs since it can load more into RAM. XP requires as little as 64MB but will use as much as 512MB or more. Anything less than 128MB and Microsoft states XP won't run as well, or some features won't be available.

I finally figured out what happened.
A program was asking for permission to access the Internet through my firewall (Zone Alarm) caused the crashes. That dialogue remained unnoticed for several hours, because I've not been on my PC, and that seemed to have caused a blockade of some CPU-cycles and the WUs crashed. When it happened the first time it was only a guess, but after the second time it became pretty clear that it wasn't a graphics card driver, even though the information the error code gave indicated that. It was the firewall dialogue that asked for Internet access. Thanks for your help though!
I wonder why it gave that error code instead of another. Actually I don't know how many exist, just glade I don't have many. ;-)

Zone Alarm probably accounts for more problems on the Q&A pages than any other single subject.

It always worked well for me for many years, except crashing some WUs twice. But now I can prevent that by denying internet-connection-request-dialogues.

Which firewall for Windows do you recommend, Knight?

I have been seeing a number of the compute errors after 6+ hours of chunking away.
These are the latest two.

3/1/2007 11:39:46 PM|SETI@home|Unrecoverable error for result 05no03ab.19318.32177.123590.3.214_0 ( - exit code -1073741819 (0xc0000005))
3/2/2007 4:24:08 AM|SETI@home|Unrecoverable error for result 28oc03aa.16666.15168.959636.3.215_3 ( - exit code -1073741819 (0xc0000005))

I have seen at least 8 more during the month of Feb. and they have all been the
same exit code. This is an XP Pro with 512m memory (HP DX2200), I do not use any
screen saver. Most of the errors have occured multiple systems reporting the same problem on the same WU. Has there been any answer to this problem?
