Here's one for you folks.

One of my machines runs BOINC and nothing else, its a completely dedicated cruncher. When I'm not uploading or downloading data it is completely disconnected from the internet and its wireless abilities have been disabled.

When its busy crunching away the Cursor slowly creeps across the screen, its totally wierd.

Anyone have any idea whats going on and how I can fix it?

The machine isn't being hacked as its completely disconnected from the internet, Virus scans show the machine clean. It currently runs BOINC 5.4.11 with Simon's SSE2 2.0 Opt. Apt.

Its the only machine I've noticed this happening on. If anyone has any idea's I'd be eternally grateful.

This may not have anything to do with BOINC. I had a machine that had the exact same "issue", but wasn't running BOINC, and I found out was due to a cheap optical mouse. After replacing with a higher quality one, the "cursor creep" went away.

That is possible then. This machine has a Logitech Optical Mouse. I'll try swapping out the mouse and see what happens.

Odd that you mention that. The one I had problems with was a Logitech too. Note that not all Logitech are necessarily bad, as I simply used a higher quality version of the same brand and it worked fine.

My Logitech wireless does it too and it wasn't cheap. Not to mention the number of batteries it eats up.

i had a cheap optical mouse here that used to take rather large trips while it was in use and during that time would go completely unresponsive. i switched back to a ball mouse and all was fine. now i'm using a logitech G5 mouse and all is well so far.
long story short; cheap optical mouses suck.

Yep, Problem solved, after running all night the Cursor hasn't moved. The culprit was the Logitech Optical Mouse.

My Logitech optical does this also.

I had this behavior too. I was able to fix it by using an adapter for PS/2 (it is an USB mouse by default) and connect it to the PS/2 port. This Adapter should nomally included in your mouse package box.

Or, as the worse case scenario solution, you can always stop binge drinking (or whatever hallucinogen you're taking).

It might just be the mouse driver. When I have had this issue in the past ( a few times) , I just go get the latest Logitech software (works with almost all mice) and it normally fixes it.

When you changed mice, windows probably detected a new device and fixed your problem.

If not, move that cheese icon somewhere else. :-)

I'd have to unplug it and plug it in again or thump it to get it to work again. Same behavior when it was used as usb and ps2.

Interesting to know. Sounds like it might be time to forget Logitech and stick with MS mice (they seem to do well in that market).
