Its not hard to run both SETI and BETA. :-) Just like running any of the other projects. :-) I've never had any problems on any BETA work units. I'm looking forward to crunching the new data over there, will probably stop doing any work here and focus over there. See you all after the outage! If you use an optimised application it can cause problems running both. 5.6.x and later clients will fix this problem though. BOINC WIKI BOINCing since 2002/12/8 |

During tomorrow's outage, they will be updating the database (I am betting on both), and updating the splitters, etc. on BETA for the multibeam recorder. If you are interested, get on BETA, and you will be testing the newest software. I'm so glad i'm not a one of the testers, my hats off to you all beta testers. |

No, I do not assume the old tapes are holding us back. What I meant was that with the new system we will be able to determine if a "noisy" workunit is really garbage. Since the new receiver is recording from seven different points at a time, we can compare the "noisy" workunit against the other six workunits recorded at that precise point in time! Now do you see why I was so eager to move on? :) Overclock with the MSI G31M3-L and Intel E8600 3.33Ghz Intel D865GLC Socket 478 Motherboard ~How To Overclock The Eee ASUS 1005HA Netbook To 1.9Ghz~ |

Everyone realizes that all the new data recording is on hard disks, right? You assume that the only thing keeping us from crunching the new data are the last pesky old tapes. There are lots of threads on this subject, but the data returned from the new recorder isn't exactly like the data from the old recorder. Reading from disk isn't exactly the same as the tape images from tapes. ... which is why the SETI Beta project is going to start getting data from the new recorder next week -- so the process can be tested before work is sent to most crunchers. The odds are about the same for every work unit -- E.T. might be on the oldest tape. |

LOL, or at least transferred to a different storage medium. ;-) I'd almost bet they had thought about that already. As far as the total amount of data they have one thing's for certain, it's more than I can store. :-) Alinator |

FYI: In case you missed this in the Tech News: The last of the known never-touched classic data tapes has been read last week and is in the splitter queue. Next we will start reading tapes that have gone through the pipeline in some form or another, but for some reason never made it into our master database. Possible reasons include: bad data (but hopefully not), a tape drive failure that caused the tapes to remain unread (surprisingly more common than you'd think), poor initial analysis or database corruption leading to failure during redundancy checking. So don't be upset when tapes from the late 90's appear on the queue. Data from 1998 is worth the same as data taken in 2006. The ETs we are looking for come from light years away. A few years won't make any difference when looking for signals consistently repeating over time.

Everyone realizes that all the new data recording is on hard disks, right? Do you realize that this means 0% data loss? Oh and seven times the WU production? I cannot wait. Take SETI down now so we can use the next generation equipment and conduct deeper scientific analysis! LOL, or at least transferred to a different storage medium. ;-) That may well be a good idea if they have enough space on their donated big fileserver. Those tapes will get read again for astropulse, they could also be saved onto the fileserver at the same time. I wonder how much data that is in total...? As soon as the betatest of Alfa discs is over and Alfa workunits are released to the general population, I would think SetiAdmin would take all those old tapes and throw them in the fire... Very much NOT!!! Do you realise just how much data is on those things?! And the value for other studies?... I suspect that they will be kept for some time yet. I doubt that those tapes are recyclable but I might be wrong. If the reels themselves are made of aluminum they could be recycled but I doubt if that would be worth the time. Maybe California and/or the locality requires throwing things like that in the general trash. |

When will all old tapes be crunched? And when will we analyze our first set from the new 7-Beam-Receiver? The thread is here http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=35995#474039

I don't know about when we will run out of old tapes, however new data from the receiver should be showing up over on BETA sometime next week. When it will come here, depends on if theres any problems over on the BETA site. Wanna be one of the first to crunch it, sign up as a BETA tester, we could use all the help we can. Plus, ASTROPULSE should be coming as well, unknown exactly when though, as per a post from Eric Korpela somewhere, I just can't find it right now. Jeremy
