Message 478191 - Posted: 10 Dec 2006, 15:21:05 UTC - in response to Message 478179.

I built a cats whisker radio, in the late 50's, got Luxembourg 208 no problem.

Now THAT'S a blast from the past! Is that radio station still going?

I remember buying my first "transistor" radio back in 1965. The BBC radio stations still included the Light Programme (now Radio 1)

I'll take old radio for $500 Alex.

WGY Schnectady, NY.

What are the call letter for the first AM Broadcast Station.

BONUS POINTS: Name the first TV Station.

bonus answer herehttp://www.tvhistory.tv/W2XB%20WGY%20WRGB%20TV%20Station.htm
first am radio station here http://members.aol.com/jeff99500/first.html
ummm bbq smells good!
oh, and I WIN!

The 500 points goes to Mikey :)

Want an additional 500 points.. Why the Name WRGB?
For 500 more points: What are three musical notes in the NBC chime and what do the stand for.

Just for the record: what we have come to know as AM radio makes WGY the first. WGY was and still is the oldest licensed broadcast station in the US.

Uh... because they sound good played in sequence on a xylophone?

Nope they have a very specific meaning.

(G)eneral (E)lectric (C)orporation. GE was then and is now the parent company of NBC.

Despite an urban legend, the three note combination of G-E-C was not related at all to RCA's original stockholder (which became NBC's parent after it bought RCA in 1986 and is still its ultimate parent), the General Electric Company.

You need to go to GE's museum where they do say it's because of GEC.

The change of the tones during World War II were rumored to be a covert signal to certain gov'mint agencies.
