I'm off to try the urpmi thing. Here's what I want to get installed and running: a CPU freq display (real time) Temp sensor program (cpu, Mobo, HD) that displays processor capabilities like CPUZ Optimized version of seti RealVNC After that I can OC what I can, then put this puter in the back corner with others. LOL Then I can plot and scheme as to how to get another dual core past the sentry (read-wife). |

EEK, I click "switch user", started new session, typed in "root" and password, and it says root login is not allowed. HuH? This is exactly like the last time and I reinstalled, formatted everything, and entered passwords for all users including root. Any ideas? |

...I'm currently installing the full package of Mandriva-free-2007-i586. I've selected the following install items: Well, it's been 41 min since my last post and I'm up and running. Now to install boinc. I guess Linux IS just like windows.....both take 39-40 min to install. LOL That is very unfair! You don't get a few hundred APPLICATIONS installed in that time on Windows! Untick a few of those applications install boxes and you'll be down to just a few minutes AND still have more goodies then ever comes with the stock Windy stuff... You've got a lot of menu goodies to play with in there :-) Have fun! Cheers, Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

EEK, I click "switch user", started new session, typed in "root" and password, and it says root login is not allowed. HuH? Yes. You've been called a virus and stopped dead! :-P More seriously, this is one of the fundamental features as to why there are no live viruses on Linux (or other unix-like) systems. Sorry, you can't use "switch user" to jump straight into "root". You've got to know what you're doing before trying that silliness!! In short: You should not try to run the desktop as root. Instead, you run as a normal user and then only call up root for tasks or applications that actually need that level. One example is for "Configure your computer" or drakconf. You can use switch user to another normal user if you've set one up. And if determined you could run the desktop as root but that really is too silly to try! (You get the red screen of the devil to remind you not to go there!!) Much better is to use the GUI configure tools or if you really do want to tramp around as root, then drop to a terminal and then use the "su" command. (Other distros now use "sudo" so that you now never logon as root as such.) So what you trying to do? Aside: Mandriva is known to be "cutting edge" stuff in that they put together the distro using up-to-the-moment releases. You can expect there to be a few updates for the first month or two as the few GBytes of applications and system settle a little. (Hence why I recommend Ubuntu/Kubuntu to first time initiates :-) ) Have fun! On the liveCD I could just logout and login as root. I need to be in root to copy and paste the Urpmi URL that you linked me to earlier. I can't seem to login as root on the GUI. Yes, typing SU in console does work. |

ah,, wait a min. I might be able to use "tony"(via ff) and get the url, then open console, type SU and then paste the url there??? I'm off to try this. UPDATE It seems to be working. Hmmm, after it does what it does don't I need to be in root to run the linux command center to do the software management??? I still think I should be able to be in root and use gui. Ahh, the control center asks for root password. nevermind |

Question: I've looked through "all", "not installed" and everywhere on the MLCC and can't find any software to do what's on my list. Nothing to be like cpuz, nothing to monitor temps, nothing to optimize seti(but I didn't expect this), and Nothing resembling Realvnc. What now? |

Nothing to be like cpuz, nothing to monitor temps, nothing to optimize seti(but I didn't expect this), and Nothing resembling Realvnc. What now? The LiveCD can afford to be Windows-esq sloppy in that you're running from a read-only system that is rather difficult to bugger-up!... :-) Yep, you've discovered how the root logon is featured from a user GUI. All good stuff! And for your utils list: cpuz: You can get all info from a commandline cat /proc/cpuinfo (You can use the "Run Command" menu item. Select "options -> run in terminal" so that you can see the output.) Also try cpufrequtils. Sorry, never looked for a cpuz-like GUI myself. Monitoring: Look up lmsensors, GKRellm, KSensors, KSysGuard. If you've installed them, then they'll be in "system -> monitoring ->". lmsensors will need setting up for your motherboard. And there's lots of others! Realvnc: tightvnc, and others. Check what you've installed or just search "vnc". Happy hackings, Cheers, Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

I picked KDE and set the autologon from the install process (this time). EEK! Another former Tramiel OS user, 1.0 or 1.2? Batman, I don't remember. I had a 520ST, then switched up to the 1040ST. Can you imagine the brilliance and power that come with being able to use not one(520st), but BOTH sides of a floppy??? Wow, what power and storage. (all apps were run from floppy and/or stored in ram) Anyway, Tonys' list of things to do just had another knocked off the list. [big checkmark} Optimized seti is done [/end task] moving on to temp sensors, cpu freq and overclocking. Then to the big one (I fear) realvnc. Hope everyone is enjoying a good thanksgiving. I'm off to do the dishes and pack away the excess turkey (into fridge, not stomach) |

Wow, what power and storage. (all apps were run from floppy and/or stored in ram) When I got my 520ST+ [ with double stacked RAMs :o) ], it was faster than all the IBM clones in our office. Atari really blew it when they didn't target the professional market immediately. Regards Hans |

OK knock two items off the list. I got optimized seti earlier and now gkrellm seems to be working. I see the temp anyway, but not the freq. It has lots of other stuff, so I'm off to OC this. the only thing left is realvnc (man, I'm not looking forward to that one). |

This is why I wanted a display of my "real" frequencies. I've attempted to overclock this. The ECS Phoenix bios give 4 options in that direction. Processor is P4 1.8ghz, 256 cache, 400 VCore adjustments of +2%, +4%, and +6% Vdimm adjustments of +2%, +4%, and +6% Multiplier 10x-? CPU clock (FSB) 100-132 range. I had the cpu clock(fsb) set to 100 through all but the last set of data. VDimm and Vcore were also maintained at +2 up until the multiplier change to 23 then +4 and finally +6 were used for both. I started the system, then boinc. Waited 2 min then ran benchmarks. After benchmarks I waited another two min and recorded temperature of cpu. Whetstone/drystone are reported like 444/1245. Mult 21X (2.1G), 437/1271, 36C 22X (2.2Ghz), 478/1279, 36C 23X (2.3Ghz), 476/1263, 36C At this point I tried 24 and ran tests but when I got into Bios I saw it reset itself to 23. 24X (reset to 23X),478/1281, 36C I upped the voltage to +6% on both here and tried 24 again (this time it took) 24X (2.4Ghz), 476/1264, 37C I couldn't increase it above 24X so I changed the CPU clock from 100 to 101 (note: both V adjustments are still maxed at +6%) 24X, 101 clock (2.424Ghz), 444/1290, 37C Doesn't it seem like there should be more noticeable results ???? I wish I could see actual freqs. After 15 min of running b oinc it reports 38C, but did see it up to 40 once. |

This is why I wanted a display of my "real" frequencies. I've attempted to overclock this. Try "cat /proc/cpuinfo" from the command line. The frequency reported there is the real frequency, measured against the real time clock. Regards Hans P.S: Should be the same number as in gkrellm, though... |

If you noticed my list started at 21X. I did the others earlier without the benefit of the temp monitor and here they are. 10X (1.0Ghz) 483/1251 18X (1.8Ghz) 482/1276 19X (1.9Ghz) 482/1274 20X (2.0Ghz) 484/1271 21X (2.1Ghz) 484/1265 |

Says 1800.000 Now that is weird... I'm getting 3215.749 for my P4 3.2 Regards Hans |

looking through the MOBO manual I have a jumper JP2 which is labelled CPU bus speed select jumper. It has two options 1-2 Auto 2-3 533 This processor is the 400mhz variety (P4 1.8, 256 L2, 400mhz It's currently on auto. I wonder what would happen if??? |
Astro Send message Joined: 16 Apr 02 Posts: 8026 Credit: 600,015 RAC: 0 |
I wonder it the 533 should really read "manually settable in bios". Under "install hardware" and "before installing the processor" there is this: "This mainboard automatically determines the CPU clock frequency and system bus frequency for the processor. You may be able to change these setting by making changes to jumpers on the mainboard, or changing the settings in the system Setup Utility. We Strongly...blah blah blah |

Ok, I've changed all 4 setting back to default/low. Even set multiplier at 16X instead of 18X. shutting down to move jumper. |
