I have tried to get my prefs to update with no joy at all for the past few weeks. Have added prefs for home and no change. MESSAGES states that there are no seperate prefs for home, using defaults. What's the go here?

This is a server side error and is being 'worked on'. Actually they thought they had it fixed, evidently not.

You can change your global_prefs.xml locally, just don't mess with the <mod_time> tag:

Looks like I have to make all changes locally for the next couple of decades, D'Oh :o)

I've been trying out BOINC 5.7.2 over the weekend (the test version with the simple GUI), and it seems as if that version is downloading preferences and reacting to changes made in 'your account' settings as it should. Yet I have older BOINC clients hooked up to the same settings, which haven't reacted to (or, so far as I can tell, even noticed) the changes. I've also been helping a couple of people recently who got no global_prefs file when they first connected to BOINC.

So my current guess is the Berkeley have made some server-side changes to the preferences code for the simple GUI, and forgot to tick the box for backwards compatibility with the currently recommended BOINC 5.4.11

I think that one thing that is important to remind volunteer crunchers, especially the new ones, is that the reason most problems show up at Seti first but not at other projects is that Seti is Boinc's guinea pig.

One of the main reasons that Seti was able to survive after Classic ran out of funds, was Boinc's need for a testing platform. We are Boinc's guinea pig and will probably continue to be as long as Seti manages to limp along on the meager funds that are mostly donated by its volunteers.

Any changes they want or need to make and test on the sever side software or to the Boinc manager are tested here first. We will always feel the brunt of these experiments. That is now our main purpose.

The search for ET may be the volunteers main goal and the sexinest of the project brought most of us here, but, unfortunately, it no longer as the same appeal to the corporate and governmental agencies that are willing to put the big bucks into research projects. We are pretty much on our own and must survive as best we can.

The problem of updating the general preferences that a lot of people encountered since several weeks using the recommended Boinc version has been fixed.
General preferences, if changed on the website, can now be updated without any problem on the host.

Gee whiz, I don't mind giving a Band-Aid to Seti, Hopefully they'll be able to get more funds soon.

Preference Question:

If you have Boinc setup so it will suspend during use, does this also suspend uploads and downloads? Is Boinc totally shut down during the suspend mode?

Thanks

I never tested it, but I would assume so, since nothing else is running and is in a suspend mode, I don't see how it could know when to download/upload anything unless its in the middle of doing so.

Its amazing that you think that I am here just running crunchers and otherwise soaking up no knowledge as to what is actually going on here, obviously if I am worried about my points its because I have done the research to run optimized apps and adjust my prefs(threw einstein). The only pref I couldnt get to run no matter what was the downloading of extra work to cover outages, well it would work but it didnt seem to download the proper amound but it did download more.

The fact is I crunch pretty much all the time with my two PC's, and my competitors on my team are using 10+. The point being that this is a contest and a good thing to do at the same time. I just like to make it more competitive.

So you can imagine my frustration and the frustration of other people who log in and notice there PC has only been running when it is not in use, except BOINC thought the computer was in use the whole time so it didnt run at all. OK check prefs make the change problem solved, go over prefs notice that now it is only using 1 core, change that too. Problem is BOINC is sending 1.5 days of work like I want it to but it denied my computer the ability to update the prefs till that time even if I tried to manually update the prefs.

Is Seti out to piss me off....no. Did whatever happen effect you people, obviously not, but for no reason whatsoever my settings were reset. I didnt ask for your opinion I asked what the point was. NONE of you have stated a solution to this.

If i wanted sh*t out of you I would squeeze it out of your heads.

One question; were you using a location, or the default venue?

The fact is: YOU and YOUR TEAM have already lost the contest!

Unless you and everyone on your team goes out and buys a super computer today...you LOST!

Better luck next time.

So, did you hand-edit your general_prefs.xml, or do you just want to rant?

Let's look at this logically. You know SETI is not out to piss you off. You know it didn't happen to everyone from their responses. You know your preferences were reset for some reason.

So, based upon the above, how can anyone duplicate the problem if they haven't experienced the problem? They can't reproduce it, so they can't even offer a solution! The obvious observation is that it's some sort of quirk that seems to have affected the minority, of which you were a part of.

This is no fault of anyone else's. There's no reason to treat people the way you are/have. It's amazing how many people out there think being a jerk is the only way to get results - and many of them think this is some sort of new idea.

If i wanted ! out of you I would squeeze it out of your heads.

Please don't ever post things like this again. There's no need for it.
