Now WITHOUT even hinting at trying to start a flame-war ... Please can someone tell me at what point did this farce of a trial even nudge toward the "Justice" it trumpeted it would deliver? Saddam Hussein was guilty even BEFORE the trial. I thought trials - especially ones where the death penalty is a verdict option - were (in sophisticated societies - including the US) supposed to be carried out by ones Peers. There is not one of Saddam Husseins Peers on the panel that has found him guilty. There is not a Shia or a Kurd that will ever find him innocent ... even if it could be factually proven that for the last 30 years he was living on a Pacific Island with no telephone, Fax, Snail Mail, or Satellite or other form of communication - including "letter-in-a-bottle". This trial has been a total travesty of the justice much and often trumpeted by your President. It is Wild West justice from 2 centuries ago. It is NOT civilised, and by being a party to the whole sorry debacle, the US paints itself with the same brush as the uncivilised people who have now declared the death penalty on him. It is a total abrogation of responsibility by the US for the reasons it went to war in the first place. It is a cynical show trial that should never have been allowed to proceed. I agree with an earlier poster that it would have been better to have put a bullet into him for "trying to escape", than to allow this farce to go on for as long as it has. It is yet another example of the parlous way that the US has conducted this military action. It is another example to the World - were ever one needed - of the ineptitude of the US Administration and the callous disregard for the normalities of justice and civilised conduct. Why was Saddam Hussein, if not shot, just taken to Guantanamo bay, and allowed to rot there? [edit] punctuation and spelling |

You think this is an appropriate legal system for the much trumpeted "Democracy" that the US said (at second or third bite) that it wanted to bring to Iraq? This is NO different to the repressive regime of Saddam Hussein ... Only different rulers ... different religious chiefs. If this is an example of the Democracy that the US favours, then I have to admit to being a detractor. Iraq has NOT changed one iota, in this case, and America, far from being bloodless, is steeped in the damnation of it all. ADDED ... Believe me ... I am NO lover of Saddam Hussein. I met him on 3 occasions and was glad to escape on all three. But the way he has been treated by American "Justice" is dreadful. It is a shame on a morally bankrupt President and Administration. |

If you mean "Farsi" - which I suppose means the same thing ... Only every Shia in town! This proves the point that Saddam Husseins trial has been 'Farsical' from the outset! It served only to tip a wink at Justice and kill the bast**d anyway! But there are MANY more ways of killing a cat than choking it with cream. |

[edit] added the word 'farcical' OK, I gotta spell it out in long words. I think it is absolutely farcical that this trial took place or anything had to happen to prove the guilt of this devil in an Iraqi uniform. That anyone should think Iraq is democratic in any way just now or the foreseeable millenia is difficult to understand, and that it could in any way conduct a fair legal and police system with any semblance of control of the country.... I'll just sum up in Fars.. Cobblers! flaming balloons |

What has happened to Tariq Aziz? Me too. His defense has been that Sadaam Hussein has been in charge of all policy. In his last appearance he was wearing a hospital gown. When do they plan to carry out the executions? Until that date, the risk of westerners being kidnapped as hostages is extemely high. I'd tell any friends there to arm themselves and bunk down in an army base until that's over with. |

Who is responsible for making the trial a farce? Surely Saddam, his cronies, and his lawyers played a large part in it. Capitalize on this good fortune, one word can bring you round ... changes. |

Does it even matter to the US hating people here that Saddam signed a presidential decree for the execution of 148 shiites including CHILDREN? 50 of them didn't even make it to the gallows because they were tortured to death. now now..don't go tossing logic at the Bush Haters Club...might hurt their wee feelings. |
