It appears that my installing BOINC 5.4.11 has started causing another problem. I am now getting an IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL blue screen of death message upon restart/shutdown of the machine. The two most common symptoms that give that error message are an overheating CPU (which SETI tends to do if you don't have a good enough CPU fan or enough case fans), or failing RAM. I'd start by checking your CPU/case temps (case temp can be taken with a regular thermometer if you'd like. I wouldn't trust software thermal readings - they're often inaccurate). If everything appears fine there, try downloading a free RAM test utility called MemTest86+. This will allow you to create a bootable floppy or CD with the test program that will launch right after a reboot. Let it run for a few passes to see if can find any RAM errors. |

Update: Go back and download one of the 5.?.? version, the older 4.?.? will not work. Click the download link and then click the all versions link below what pops up. I use IE7 on one of my machines and have 5.4.9 and it works fine.

Update: It appears that my installing BOINC 5.4.11 has started causing another problem. I am now getting an IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL blue screen of death message upon restart/shutdown of the machine. This problem went away after uninstalling BOINC 5.4.11. Unfortunately, I tried re-installing the older version (4.45), but it still does not work with those other MS updates. So, unfortunately, I guess I'll need to keep BOINC off of this machine until a solution is found. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bill |

Hello. I also had a problem with BOINC after the latest round of Microsoft security updates (which I applied today). These "urgent updates" included the installation of IE7. After uninstalling BOINC (v 4.45) and then re-installing BOINC (v 5.4.11), the problem disappeared. Some details: After applying the updates (and rebooting), the BOINC Manager (which had worked rock-solid for over a year) told me that it "failed to connect". I stopped BOINC and restarted it and got the same error. It looked like the status (in the lower-right corner of the BOINC Manager) was saying "connecting to localhost" before popping up the "failed to connect" error message. I have not changed any BOINC settings in a really long time (and I do not have IIS installed on this machine). In any case, I also tried rebooting, but I continued to get the "failed to connect" message. I then uninstalled BOINC (v 4.45) and then re-installed (v 5.4.11). Everything then started working again. I didn't even have to reconfigure the SETI@home project. Everything just started working. Strangely, a few days ago, I applied the Microsoft updates to another machine running BOINC and it did not appear to have any of these same problems. So, perhaps you can try the uninstall/reinstall approach. Good luck, Bill B. Atlanta, GA |

I installed BOINC last week on my work computer (XP Pro); had it configured to run through our proxy server, and everything was just fine. IE 7 was installed on the computer, and now BOINC cannot connect to its server to get more data or to report...nothing else has changed in the set up, except for the installation of IE7. Check with your Systems Admins to make sure they didn't make any changes to the network environment. Calm Chaos Forum...Join Calm Chaos Now |

Maybe check the windows firewall on your work machine, and make sure the IE7 install did not do anything to change the firewall settings. Occasionally Microsoft updates have been known to make changes to the firewall. Especially if it has been deactivated, Micorsoft seems to like to turn it back on. You need a second life?
