hmm thanx that gives me an idea going to try c&p the global pref file from one of my other boxes

ok cured
the c&p of the global pref file sorted it after all
as to why the file was never created in the first place
for either hd or os tried must ........just be a glitch somewhere ?

my latest pentium d will only download 8460sec of work at a time ie one wu
cant figure why preferences are fine for all other dual core pcs and plenty hd space any thoughts guys

could this be the issue

This message only means that you have not set up a venue for this computer for 'Home','School' or 'Work' but instead the default general preference page is being used. It is informational not an error message

I believe that this means the the general preferences were not readable for some reason.

If you changed anything under the General Preferences, this is a global BOINC wide part of the system. Changing that on 1 project will change it across all of them. Thats how my understanding of it is. Maybe someone with a better, longer reason can chime in. :-)

Yes, Global Preferences are applied to all projects. However each project keeps its own copy of your global preferences. A host must be attached to multiple projects to ensure that a change to the preferences in one project will affect whats shown in the other projects. This brings up another point too--you should pick a 'master' project and modify your global preferences from that one project only. This prevents you from editing a set of preferences on a project that has not been updated yet.

Sounds like your old HD with Win2K didn't have the multiprocessor HAL installed.

As for not downloading a lot of work, can you check the stats "%of time BOINC is running" and "While BOINC running, % of time work allowed"? My guess is that they are quite low and preventing you from downloading more work.

now i REALLY have no idea why it will only get 1 wu at a time not even 1 per core

If the computer you are talking about is this one:

If you look under the number of CPUs, you will see that the system only thinks you have one core. So that is likely why you are only getting a single WU and not two.

Is this computer using the same profile as your other Pentium Ds?

thx for the heads up on the core issue the mystery deepens ,as it should still dl more wus than that even on 1 core
gonna try another hd for the wu issue
