There is a way.

If you have a machine at home that has the same OS and basic CPU type, you can download the executables at home, and copy them to a thumb drive (or floppies) and carry them in to work (assuming that you have permission).

Yes, many network Admins refuse to allow programs to download executables because of the high risk of viruses or worms, but the BOINC developers have chosen to do this because of new science apps being distributed all the time, and many people refuse to update unless they really have to, then they complain about it. This way, SETI (and any other project) can automatically distribute new executables and their required DLLs without user intervention, providing automatic fixes to problems in their software, or automatic enhancements without user intervention.

So, there is a reason for it; there's a method to the madness. It wasn't done for no good reason, and the developers fully understand that there's many network Admins that don't allow this kind of thing. But it still goes back to the Terms - basically if your network Admin doesn't like this type of behavior from a program, then you can't run it.

I don't know about "many", but I'm sure they will lose some CPU power. However, it's always best to lose some CPU power to those networks that don't allow this kind of thing than to be on the receiving end of a lawsuit for stolen CPU time due to unauthorized access on the employee's behalf.

It's very black-and-white. Either your Admin will allow this and make an exception for BOINC, or they will not allow it and you'll just have to run it on your home computer instead. 8-)

However, the problem still appears to be your network. Apparently your Admin is allowing executables to be downloaded through your Antivirus because of Antivirus updates. Getting files "somewhere in the network" is different than getting them through the internet, and it's completely different than allowing a program to download an executable automatically, which to many networks is the methods of a worm or virus.

Regardless, something on your end is blocking the software from automatically being downloaded onto your computer. You'll need to speak to your administrator about that, since we have no control over it. If you indeed have permission, I'm sure they'll gladly help.

it looks like you have the same problem as the original poster. You are using a firewall/proxy that is removing the EXE and DLL files. The none executable files are downloading just fine.

To go one step further with what AB said, that indeed BOINC must download an executable and typically an accompanying .DLL file to actually process the science for the chosen project, is that it's also a safe method in that the files are downloaded from the project servers using an MD5 checksum. If the file is tampered with in any way during download, it will fail the MD5 checksum showing a potential hazard/corrupted file/tampering.

As long as you trust the project that you are crunching for, this should be considered good enough security to allow the downloaded application. If you do not trust the science project you are attempting to crunch for, then it would be wise to not participate in that project, or any project.

I feel for everyone having problems.
I have a fast computer I give up already, I used to run seti 24/7 for two years until BOINC came into the picture you think all these brains could make software that everyone could use. I installed BOINC four times and tried everything and I just cant get it to work I like to help but this is not worth the agravation.
I'll come back in a year to see if they figured out how to write software that works without all the greif.

I think these lines show your problem....the files start downloading then do not come thru successfully. What kind of internet connection do you have? Are you using a proxy? Are you using a firewall?

Yes proxy + firewall, if i'va successfully reached the project it seems obvious for me that the connection is ok.

I think I found where the trouble come from, does Boinc try to load .exe or .dll files? If yes it will fail because my network don't allow the download of dangerous files directly.... Moreover if it is true I will refuse too to download files other than data files without my agreement and for each file!!!!

Thanks for help.... but i think it's dead for me ....

I think these lines show your problem....the files start downloading then do not come thru successfully. What kind of internet connection do you have? Are you using a proxy? Are you using a firewall?
I saw you tried to download 4 units and they all failed for the same reasons.

Which URL do you use to attach to Seti?

I use 'http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/' after a mistake, so is the reason of error message... but after I always got error messages I try to post them tomorrow after the connection delay that I can't reduce ...
