It may seem a funny stupid little detail, but when running BOINC do NOT run GoogleEarth, or any Media Player... even too many open windows may stall the system. I have not experienced any problems on my AMD Duron or my Intel C2D. I run Boinc applications 24/7 on both and it dutifully steps aside to free all the CPU cycles I need whether I surf the net (average of 6 to 8 screens or tabs), download with my P2P (uTorrent 24/7), listen to music (all the time) or watch movies. I even play non graphic intensive games with no problems. Boinc V7.2.42 Win7 i5 3.33G 4GB, GTX470 |

I also don't have this problem, however, it may be a problem with insufficient RAM. Just a possibility as this would cause thrashing. BOINC WIKI |

It may seem a funny stupid little detail, but when running BOINC do NOT run GoogleEarth, or any Media Player... even too many open windows may stall the system. On this G5 Mac I’ve had Google Earth, Starry Night, the Gimp (under X11), Safari, MT-Newswatcher, and assorted utilities all running at once while I listen to a podcast through iTunesâ€â€in addition to BOINC, of courseâ€â€without any problems at all. Even my old single-processor G4 at work creates no difficulties by crunching while I simultaneously run QuarkXPress, some older graphics apps under Classic (the OS 9 emulator, not S@h v3–), with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat (all of which are memory hogs), while downloading large files via FTP … both machines have more RAM than they shipped with, but hardly a spectacular amount: 2.5 GB and 1 GB respectively. |

This may sound silly, but i don't understand how we can detect them.... do we scan ALL the frequences? what if they use a different signal altogether? perhaps they don't use radio waves and use some other mode of comunication...not that i'm knocking this... any attempt to find out if we are alone is better than no attempt... but it seems to me that there are just so much we don't know that i wonder if we are wasting our time and energy.. i MIGHT be wrong on this subject so feel free to correct me, using seti@home you cannon detect bacterial colonies and such, you can dectect raido waves, which is used in telecommunications, which in turn, says that these life forms are intellegent, having satilites, and such in short term, we cant find small stuff with this, only stuff advanced enough to use raido frequencies to communicate with other of presumibly its own kind |

I left the seti@home project well over a year ago because of frustrations with BOINC and the inability to transfer my classic account credits to my new BOINC account. I finally got over it and rejoined a few days ago. I downloaded and installed BOINC and revived my account. I successfully attached the seti@home project (Although I did get an error trying to do so. Sorry, can't remember the message.) But the attach worked and I've had set@home chugging away on my home computer with no problems. I still can't transfer my old credits; can't find my old account with my email, so I guess they are lost in the ether. But, I can still contribute from here on out. So I am. So suck it up and stick with it! It isn't that hard to get it going. |

Glad you decided to try again. Things still have rough edges every so often, but has been fairly stable. Give this transfer page a try. I believe all you need to know is your old e-mail for Classic and you can get your information back. Good luck on your crunching! My movie https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/502242 |

I first tried out Seti and Boinc in August of 2006 with a machine I was retiring from the Folding@Home project and found that Boinc wasn't that hard to set up for me. I ran it for about a month or so before parting out that machine, but both Boinc and Seti left a decent impression on me then as being fairly reliable and easy to use. Fast forward to this month; I got pretty disgusted with some of the events happening with the F@H project and found that I was no longer having fun just running that project with my little crunching farm, so I decided to switch some machines to Boinc and Seti (since the forums I fold for also has a big Seti team too). I then set up Boinc on several of my computers with no real problems and attached them all to Seti (again, with no problems). I now have 5 machines crunching for Seti and it is going pretty painlessly and it seems that my machines are doing a fair amount of work. Now I can't compare Boinc to the Seti Classic program as I never tried Seti Classic. But to me the Boinc client was easy to set up and get running. One thing I did do was set my machines up to "Run Always" in the activity column as all my machines have 512 MB - 2 GB ram and most are dedicated crunchers. But I have no problems even with gaming on my main rig with Boinc running in the background, with 2 GB ram and a Core 2 Duo processor. One thing that might have helped me with setting up the Boinc client is the fact that I have been participating in the F@H project for 5 years, so I'm an experienced DC'er and knew that I would need to read around a little if I ran into problems setting the client up. |

I just installed boink yesterday. I was a really easy setup and the project added on the 1st try. The thing is I havent' done any work during the night, and even with the Always Calculate and Network Always ON, nothing gets done. is the project server down as the Messages pannel tell me? "Access to reference site succeded - Projects server may be temporarily down" i checked and it seems the server got updated recentrly so... I tried remaping my ports 1043 and 3016. Still doesn't download anything, even if I got the list of files to dl. I'm afraid that with a 1st contact like that, volunteers with less patience and no skills to browse through help forums would simply uninstall BOINC. |

I just installed boink yesterday. I was a really easy setup and the project added on the 1st try. What version of Boinc are you using? Since versions V5.4.9 + boinc.exe needs internet access (firewall) on ports 80 and 443 and local access (127.0.0.1) on ports 31416. boincmgr.exe, boinccmd.exe and boinc.scr also needs local access on ports 31416. Port 1043 was used on older versions. As per Home page News If your still having problems, please start a new thread and copy/paste your Message log in a post. Explain your observation as clearly as possible detailing and what you perceive to be a problem. Note: Boinc released V5.8.8 yesterday. Boinc V7.2.42 Win7 i5 3.33G 4GB, GTX470 |

I just installed boink yesterday. I was a really easy setup and the project added on the 1st try. I got the newest version, thanks for specifiying the new ports. I managed to get downloads from other projects but still no work has been done yet. No errors for that though, Ill report if it's still at 0 work done tonight. BTW im not behind a firewall, just a routeur so I don't need any rule to access port 80, i added one for port 443 and even if i dont think it's restricted, i added one for 31416 from my ip to my ip. |

I just installed boink yesterday. I was a really easy setup and the project added on the 1st try. One of the S@H servers has been sick recently (and still is as far as I know). This could explain the inability to get work from S@H. http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=37512 BOINC WIKI |
