Um, I am kinda new to this, but is there any danger of data corruption? I've got six units in various states of uploading (3-5% complete), and I am concerned that when the system comes back on that they won't successfully finish. If that happens I will not be happy. P.S.: Nice Superpi Msattler! Conroe? |

The only likelihood of data corruption is if you have mega probs with your HDD. Results awaiting upload are stored on your HDD. So long as you're happy with your PCs condition, there's no need to worry :) The way BOINC works is by loading WUs onto your Hard drive. Sections of the data are loaded into memory, crunched, and the results written back onto the HDD. By default, this occurs every 60 seconds, so even if you have a power failure, the WU will pick up from where it last wrote to the HDD. Similar applies to uploading. The result won't be wiped from your HDD until it has successfully uploaded. :)

Thanks for the reassurance. I wouldn't want my computers to do all that sweating for nothing! They would probably enjoy a break now and again, but I keep cracking the whip! |

Thanks for the heads up, My systems are scheduled to resume Network activity in a couple hours. I'm suspending all network activity until this bug is cleared up. Thanks again for the heads up :) D. |

I just suspend SETI and let other projects suck up the CPU cycles. Though for this weekend Climate is fritzed up as well. I figure the World Grid and Einstein projects appreciate the extra cycles. Thanks for the heads up, My systems are scheduled to resume Network activity in a couple hours.

I'm having upload problems too. It may not be a coincidence getting the Validate Error as the upload problems seem to have started about the same time. Robert |

I've suspended SETI on my home machines now as they are generating validate errors which, although being no fault of my own, purely an issue which has yet to be addressed by the project leaders at SETI@Home even though it has existed for a long time, will result in no credit being issued, nor the results being of any use. I'm advising my entire team to suspend SETI where possible to avoid validate errors. Join Team Starfire BOINC Chat |

I'm advising my entire team to suspend SETI where possible to avoid validate errors. I think the project beat you to it by about 10 hours! Seems to be usual procedure - may even be an automated watchdog script: "If you notice a lot of validation errors, stop accepting uploads for a while until the staff get the validators working properly again." If you're really that worried about it, why not ask them to "suspend network activity" instead? Gives you the same protection from errors, and a nice bank of work to report when the 'canaries down the mine' (read regular posters on this board) report the all-clear. |

Just got a validate error at 7:40:51 UTC, even though uploads are failing. Join Team Starfire BOINC Chat |

Sweden here  the 403 hit me too last night ... Sun Oct 15 02:53:43 2006|SETI@home|Started upload of file 08my03ab.24101.7666.698572.3.37_2_0 Sun Oct 15 02:53:44 2006|SETI@home|Temporarily failed upload of 08my03ab.24101.7666.698572.3.37_2_0: Error 403 Sun Oct 15 02:53:44 2006|SETI@home|Backing off 1 minutes and 0 seconds on upload of file 08my03ab.24101.7666.698572.3.37_2_0 ... and so on. Having five Seti-WUS waiting to be uploaded and one more still crunching I reject further downloads from S@h and suspend the ongoing crunching on the last Seti-wu until the problem is solved. Fortunately my nearest deadline is far away. Einstein will be happy of course.  By the way, these wu's waiting for upload are occupying RAM are they not? Am I better to suspend S@h alltogether at the moment and would that clear the RAM from s@h-wu's waiting for upload?

I'm attached to multiple projects and short cache so I need to keep my network activity open. Thank you. I'd did clarify in my post on my team's board that they do have the option of suspending network activity. Doesn't help on remote inaccessible machines though. Luckily I only have one like that and it does 50/50 SETI/Rosetta. I hope this gets sorted out Sunday somehow rather than having to wait for Monday. Join Team Starfire BOINC Chat |
