Message 436426 - Posted: 15 Oct 2006, 2:03:49 UTC - in response to Message 436412.

Just upped my cache from 1 day to 2 days and got a load of work downloaded, so at least thats operational. Should see me out till they fix it.

Hi,

May I ask how one would go about doing this please...??

Thank you...

Andy...

Andy do the same as I described in this post 5 min ago, but just increase the value where the pref labelled "connect to network about every X days" is.

Hi Tony,

Thank you for that...

Now I remember why I stopped using Seti, and I might just go back to not using it again if this carries on...

Regards...

Andy...

Error 403 is a regular occurrence. Every couple of weeks, despite the relevant servers showing as running, a glitch prevents uploads from clients.
Really, it's not a serious problem, as work gets uploaded eventually.
For the credit pigs, you just upload a heap of work very quickly, and get a record number of creds for that day.

Panic mode off?

Aw crud.

I got impatient and aborted one of my completed WU's. I thought it was because I just upgraded to the SSE2 optimized app. This is horrible! It's the end of the world! I lost 62 credits!<lol>

Glad to see it wasn't my computer.

On 3 of my machines I have uploaded results from completed WUs OK a few hours ago, and was able to force a "waiting to report" to "acknowledged" all right!.

On one machine I have a WU trying to upload and failing, with ...

Anyone else with this problem?

Looking around the Server Status and Cogent Link graphs I can see no reason for a failure to connect.

Really funny, I had just upgraded to SSE3 Chicken Apps and thought I had really screwed things up. Went back to stock Seti apps, same problem.. then back to the Chicken again... was about to dump everything and start from scratch when I checked here.

When we finally figure it all out, all the rules will change and we can start all over again.

So the server crapped out again...default is connect again xxx years. They'll probably fix it on Monday....or Tuesday.....or..............

Monday, Monday.....
Can't crunch that day..
Monday, Monday.....
Cam't crunch that day.
Sometimes it just turns out that way.......
Every other day
Every other day
Every other day of the week is fine (fine), yeah
But whenever Monday comes
But whenever Monday comes
You can find me crying all of the time....(pause)......

This is typical of the Error 403. Your PC will keep the completed WUs on hard drive until it is able to connect to S@h and upload them. They will not be lost unless you abort them. Just be patient. When the problem is resolved, S@h will begin to accept uploads again, and you will still be credited.

During this time, you MIGHT even get downloads from S@h, so your PC continues to crunch! :)

Since there will be a backlog of completed WUs to report, it may be an hour or two before all uploads are cleared and validated. The time taken to do this will depend on the time the "outage" lasts. Since it is the weekend, this may last until Monday morning in Berkeley.

For those who might not know, you can increase the number of WUs in your "cache" by adjusting your prefs. Under General Prefs, set "Connect to network about every" to 3 or 4 days. This should normally give you enough work to keep your PC crunching through all but the worst outages.

If your cache DOES run out, consider attaching to another project, to keep your machines busy. Once the outage is over, you can set your "back up" project to "Get No New Work", if you so wish. :)

I get:
Dear Chris:

We'd like to invite you to reconnect with SETI@home. Our records show that you've been with SETI@home since 08 May 2001, but it's been 501 days since you last returned a work unit. We want you back, and here's why:.......

What happens cannot return results, hope this is not the norm. :-)
