Message 509554 - Posted: 27 Jan 2007, 23:38:59 UTC - in response to Message 509542.

Hi Crunch3r!

I am wondering if you could possibly compile an SSSE3 BOINC Client and SETI app for Core 2 Duo processors? 32 bit and/or 64 bit?

Hi Steve,

i will just let me know what versions of BOINC and the seti app you prefer (version numbers).

Well, I am not sure which of the latest BOINC client development builds is most stable right now, but I would like an SSSE3 optimized version of the most recent stable build. I am running your 5.9.0.32 files on top of build 5.8.6a currently, and it seems to be pretty stable after 1 day so far. However, I cannot seem to run your 5.9.0.32 over 5.8.6a on my Intel T7200 laptop for more than 10 minutes without it crashing. I get an error indicating a conflict with the boinc.exe and msvcr80.dll files. It runs ok on my E6300s and Prescott P4, but not on the laptop. And, I have all the current MS updates installed.

As for which SETI app version... Again, I would like the most recent stable version optimized. I am running 32 bit XP on all of my machines.

Thanks for any help you can provide, Crunch3r!

Steve,

Have you got .NET 2.0 installed on your laptop ?

Anyhow, i will compile a 64 bit seti application from the latest source available ( for testing purposes).

I have .NET 2.0 and .NET 3.0 installed on it. But, I was getting the same error with only .NET 2.0 installed, before I installed .NET 3.0 yesterday.

Steve

I think I see part of the problem(s) Many are running a 64 bit OS and want to run a true 64 BOINC Core and App... as you note you are running XP 32 bit...

Yes, but I am having a problem running Crunch3r's 5.9.0.32 (32 bit) optimized files on my T7200 laptop, running 32 bit XP.

If there is a significant performance gain to be had in switching to 64 bit, I would be interested in learning more about that. But, so far, I have not seen too many stories of better performance with 64 bit. Maybe because the apps used mostly so far are not as optimized as they could be for EM64T?

Well,

long story ... using the stock source for 64 bit compiles won't make the seti application any faster without modifying the code, that's for sure.... actualy it will be slower...

But you can avoid that with some tricks and get it working faster though.

You should ask Kevin about that. It's been way over half year since he tested the first 64 bit seti application. ;)

Since then i ported Alex Kan's app (v6 or v 6.1 to windows ... don't know which version that was....sorry)

After several computer crashes ... most due to power outages i lost once again all source packages... ( the first one has blown up my mainboard ... the second one took my hard disk)

starting from zero sucks ... and knowing that alex's v6 did miss some signals (the windows version ) so i stoped that entirely... well i've seen/had it running for testing purposes here and ... well it was at least 50% faster than any previous release...

Anyhow, i asked some well known guys to help me to correct those issues but that was more a mistake than any success...

------------------------------------------

So what's the point of optimizing at all ....

well... if you got mostly intel cpu's use my old release cuz it's the faster one of all available...

If you got an AMD64 cpu use the latest "chicken" app v2.0 (?) or wait a moment till i'll upload a modified app of that source
(which is faster than the one you can download from lunatics.at)

Let me know on "our" board. just post a PM and i'll give you a link.

EDIT
The Source was not modified ;)

Just downloaded your Windows XP64 (AMD64/Intel EM64T) on my opteron 175...will see if it is faster. Thanks Crunch3r

No problem. Actually quite interesting to work on "PC" optimization again ...

Today i completed a "boosting application" for Alpha CPU's running linux... now 45% faster than stock clients build with gcc...

Well i guess i relase some apps. for Itanium running linux next week Cuz the Windows part seem to do very well ... ( sometimes it blows C2D's away, while having only 1.5 GHz clock speed ;)

It won't be faster at all... well it's using cpu affinity and that can increase performance by 5%...

Actually what you need is an optimized seti application to increase your output ;)

Hi crunch3r,

I see on your site you have a BOINC version 5.9.0.32 which includes BOINC core. What is the difference between using your BOINC version and using the one on boinc.berkeley.edu?

Thanks for the clarification.

And do you have one for 64 bit? If so what is required to get it? So far it seems faster. The units I had going are now going down by 2 seconds...

That's quite simple ... it's been compile from the same source as 5.9.0.32...
so you whon't get a better version of BOINC Manager for using it ;)

I'm not sure what your talking about ... the download page is quite clear...
AND don't mix up BOINC with an SETI application...

Where do I get an optimized app to run with the 64 bit Boinc I guess I downloaded from you? I thought I was downloading a 64 bit Boinc and an App. You optimize apps so I figured this was one. Guess I was wrong...Better at building computers than I am running them...

Hmmm, Seems I am now running the 64 bit Boinc with chickens 32 bit optimized app, and things may have slowed down a bit from the standard boinc and chicken app. Will give it a couple days to be sure. Guess I should go back to Intel chips as noone seems interested in making an app for 64 bit AMD...At least I can't find one....

Well after a week of running the 64 bit I have to say I like it. Made it thru all the computer problems seti was having eisier on this machine than any of my others. Units disapeared as fast as they had a place to go and I hardly even abused the buttons. My RAC is higher today than it has ever been, and no errors or any other problems. The grid buttons are cool and you can do a retry with all your units selected instead of 1 by 1. All in all I would say go for it to anyone with 64 bit XP and is wondering if they should.

Been a long time since I posted here....

But, I have only found out recently that Crunch3r was back in business. Welcome back, Crunch3r!!!

The 64 bit client is running just fine on my one 64 bit Windows machine. Sweet. To bad when the wife bought it, she got a stupid single core chip... couple dollars more, and I'd have a hot machine!!

The 32 bit client doesn't want to start properly on the AMD XP machine.... This is probably not the right thread to discuss it - I'll try to find the appropriate place. ;)

Great job - again. 64 bit all the way!!!

Now, where is that Seti client? :)

I'm going to install Vista Ultimate on this compter sometime this week:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=2758276

I'm looking for the fastest 64-bit client, with maybe a little SSSE3 thrown in.

If nobody has plans for one, and someone is willing to lend a hand, I can do it most likely.
