i have always found its the hard disks 7 so far and psus 5 so far that take the brunt of the workout seti gives a puter You have gone thru 7 hard drives running Seti? I have never lost a hard drive running Seti! Knocking on wood here!!! I have lost a couple of power supplies though. I look for them on sale and always pick up a couple, just to keep 'in stock'. I also keep the old ones from machines I tear down because the cpus are just too slow for me, unless I donate the machine, then I take out what I want and donate the rest. The local DFS has a person that takes them, then Ross Perot's old Company, EDS, takes them, refurbishes them, picking and choosing parts, then they go to needy kids in Foster Care.

There was quite a discussion a while back in another forum when I posted about the effects of kitty hair and computer problems. Some thought that I was joking about it, but when I posted back that I had actually dropped my cpu temps on a couple of my rigs by 5 to 10 degrees C after cleaning out the kitty hair that had built up in the cpu heat sinks and fans, a number of users responded that they had found the same problem with their computers! You would not believe how fast it can build up and cause problems with 4 of the rascals roaming about. Ain't that the truth? Even if you don't have a cat! Seriously, I remove a little "cake" of cathair of the intake grill very often... "I'm trying to maintain a shred of dignity in this world." - Me

You would not believe how fast it can build up and cause problems with 4 of the rascals roaming about. Hence the secondary reason I "pressurize" my cases and use coffee filters on the case fans. Then I make sure that the CPU Heatsink and Fans are "Heavy Duty" enough to take the strain of a 24/7 running load. My K6-2, 350's, (three of them, built in February of 1999), are still running to this day. They are just to slow and inefficient to run BOINC. I tried; they each want to run a 5.15 WU on BOINC 5.4.9 for 30 Hours... That is just too slow for my taste. However; Cruncher1 is an AMD Athlon XP 1.6 GHz system with 512MB RAM, and plenty of HD Space, this system is "Pressurized" and remains completely clean, and approximately 99.999% Dust FREE! (No Cat hair; either. We have 2 Cats.) The only issue I have had is with the "stock" AMD CPU FAN that failed a couple months back. I bandaid patched it once with a part I had lying around; then had to bandaid patch it again, as I don't have the $50 for the Thermaltake Copper Heat Sink and Heavy Duty Fan that I want for this system... Currently, I still have the AMD Heatsink, with an old K6-Style "CoolerMaster" CPU Fan screwed into the AMD Heatsink. The CoolerMaster FAN has been running flawlessly, combined with the "Pressurization" from the inverted case fans - the system runs cool and efficient again. I'm still saving my pennies; however, for the Thermaltake Heatsink and Fan. ;-D 8-D Crunch on Dudes! Alta Vista Babel Fish Translator TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... I´m running seti over 5 years now with 3 machines 24/7. Never had a hardware failure because of running seti. Keep the cpu´s cool is the important thing. Mike With each crime and every kindness we birth our future. |

Something that all BOINCers need to think about is computer maintenance. The speed at which these things operate these days and the heat they generate means that you need to ensure you keep your heatsinks dust free as much as possible. I have 2 cats and a dusty house, so I try and clean the heat sinks on my 2 home computers monthly. Good dust filters on the computer air inlets is also a good idea, but this just seems to mean that the stuff that does build up an the heat sink is smaller and greasier - probably shed skin cells - and so is harder to get off. If you use it, then look after it! Live long and BOINC. Paul (S@H1 8888) And proud of it!

(zaferyilmaz (at) msn.com)? MfG: zafer |

It's been 18 years since I had a decent conversation in German, so I'll keep it to English. If necessary, Champ, Hans or one of our other German friends will no doubt translate :) Most people NEVER clean the interior of their computers. This means dirty heat sinks and fans cease to operate efficiently. Dust heat sinks and fans at least every month. More, if you live in an industrial or mining area! Many video cards also have fan-cooled processors, so don't forget to clean these, too! Many people don't leave a decent gap around their tower, restricting air flow and causing overheating. Place your tower where it can breathe!!! If you bought your computer "ready made", it is likely the manufacturer didn't consider the possibility of the machine being run at full steam ahead 24/7. Therefore, it is likely the CPU heat sink and cooling fan aren't powerful enough for the purposes of running BOINC. If you wish to run ANY BOINC project, consult a person who knows, and get a better heat sink/cooling fan combination. Perhaps also consider an additional system fan. If the room the computer is kept in is hot, the air used to cool the processor and other parts will be hot, too. Therefore, it will not do it's job effectively. Choose the location of your computer room carefully. I run 3 PCs in our 7 foot by 7 foot (2 metre x 2 metre) office, in temps that range from below zero to 46 degrees Celcius, and have not had an overheating problem, due to proper ventilation. If you are having problems with computers failing, try asking yourself if there is an environmental explanation, such as those outlined above. If electricity consumption is an issue, try turning your monitor off when you aren't using it! The screensaver is nice, but if you are sitting in front of your computer staring at the screensaver, I would suggest you need a hobby! Lastly, ensure (if you can afford it) make sure your household insurance covers you for fusion of electrical appliances, and that this includes your computer(s). This advice is not only meant for friend Lauscher, but for all involved with BOINC projects. Respectfully, LGMFM
