Message 447482 - Posted: 1 Nov 2006, 3:18:32 UTC - in response to Message 447445.

FACT of the matter is......whether my cpu's are designed for redlining or not my applications are at times dramatically slower because of BOINC. Sometimes I have to manually kill the Boinc services to regain control of my computer. I really don't care whether this is a bug...or a design flaw...something needs to be done to give us more control over Boinc and the resources it competes with.

And, as said many times in this post alone, that is being worked on and is due out with the next release of BOINC. When it is released, you will be able to control what percentage of your CPU you'd like BOINC to use, or, alternatively, once the preferences server bug is fixed, you can tell BOINC to not use your system while you are using it.

There's no point to beating this dead horse. The message has been given in this thread already, no need to keep arguing the same point over and over again when there's already a plan in the works.

Finally, I bought a new cooling fan and applied new cooling paste and everything is fine.

The temperature isn´t getting higher than 42°C anymore, before it was above 70°C or even 82°C when the PC crashed, and it also crashed when playing 3D-Games.

So, IMHO if you do something for cooling it´s not only for running BOINC, but also for other applications, which use much CPU power.

Having said this I've just realised that BES does not restart on powerup so each time you turn the computer on you have to start the program. I Know you can put it in the start up file but it does not remember which program to limit. I can't write a batch file to start it from the command line because i have Bonic installed in the program file directory (which has spaces in the name) and dos does not like spaces :-( . I suppose i could reinstall bonic in a seperate directory but if the new version is comming out soon i might just wait. Is there a release date yet?

So, maybe ThreadMaster will be better, because the names of the applications to control are stored in the registry, and it starts automatically if one of these applications are executed.

Moreover, the names of the aplications only must be adapted, when there was an update when using ThreadMaster.

The only negative aspect of ThreadMaster is, that you have to type the name of the applications manually (as shown in the task-manager), instead of adding them by clicking, like BES does, but by doing so, they will not be "forgotten".

FACT of the matter is- running Seti under BOINC has had no affect on my systems performance or increased their temperatures above what they were when running Seti classic.

Just loaded the Beta 5.7.1

Fortunately processing can be controlled by the settings you enter on the web page.
Do work while computer is in use? YES/NO
-->really works

Use at most 100 percent of CPU time
--> is really limiting the TOTAL CPU utilisation to (in this case) 100%
--> on a dual core each CPU will run at 50% - which is bad

Local settings in the simple view -> preferences - seem to have no effect ;-(

So I got the processing when the system is idle - but am not using the full cpu power any more...

No, it doesn't.
Just like the old Seti, it only uses CPU time when other programmes aren't using it. When they start running, Seti stops. If they only use 40% of the CPU time, then Seti will use the remaining 60%.

On my laptop, BOINC / SETI runs at max percent all the time, even though my General Preferences say to:

Do work while computer is running on batteries?
(matters only for portable computers) no
Do work while computer is in use? no
Do work only after computer is idle for 1 minutes
Do work only between the hours of (no restriction)
Leave applications in memory while suspended?
(suspended applications will consume swap space if 'yes') no
Switch between applications every
(recommended: 60 minutes) 60 minutes
On multiprocessors, use at most 2 processors
Use at most
Enforced by versions 5.6 and greater 100 percent of CPU time

Mainly I want it to stop when I am doing other things (i.e. do NO work when the computer is in use).

In my message log though it says:

11/10/2006 10:15:48 AM|SETI@home|URL: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/; Computer ID: 1756013; location: home; project prefs: default
11/10/2006 10:15:48 AM||No general preferences found - using BOINC defaults

I;m guessing since it isn;t finding my preferences, it is using the BOINC defaults which must say to run when the computer is in use. So...

(a) Since I can access my preferences on the web manually, why can't BOINC?
(b) Is the BOINC default a local setting that I can change? And if so, where is it?

I am running what I think is the latest release version, 5.4.11

Okay..go into your account, edit general preferences, scroll down and you will see the settings you are cahnging. Winthin that is a way to make different setting for work, home and school. Make one of those, work, home or school, the settings you want for your laptop and save the changes. Go back to your accoutn and scroll way down to view your computer, select your laptop and again scroll way down and change the laptop to the setting you just changed, work, home or school. Again save changes. Go to the laptop itself and double click the icon, go to the projects tab and down below that click update. Give it a few minutes because it will probably say you have to wait 10 minutes, and your changes should work fine.

@Mikey,

I am trying with Matt and David Anderson to have things fixed regarding this.
I put a laptop on Boinc 5.4.11, did exactly what you are giving as solution to that problem but am unable to make any change to the preferences.

Did you try to change the preferences on one of your hosts running 5.4.11.

Say you goodnight as it is 1:40 in the night for me.

I have 22 machines running Boinc and several run 5.4.11 and they all work fine, I use all of the work, home, school settings for various computers.

Query for something much alike: I have Boinc running on 3 machines, suddenly on one of them Boinc have begun to kick in, taking over memory (as per TaskManager to avoid confusion) ca 320 Max to 100 Min, which "halts" all other processes.

Excuse me if I am using the wrong thread, hoping that someone of the enlightend will give me pointers in the right direction. A member since 99 of SETI I am not giving up that easily - but I have limited time for hobbies.

By the way, is there somewhere I can subscribe to info about new versions?

I'm sorry, but I don't understand the question. What is "ca 320 Max to 100 Min"? I open Task Manager and I cannot see anything similar to this. Have I missed something?

Try to set "Leave applications in memory while suspended?" to "No".

To do this, go to your General Preferences and change the option I mentioned above. Keep in mind, that it is possible to have different venues for your PCs. So if you have set up different venues on your PC please make sure to change the venue according to your computer.

Seti uses about 48 - 64 Megs per work unit of your RAM. However, as far as I know if some of them are preempted (e.g. you are in Earliest-Deadline-First-Mode), these stay in memory (and/or consume swap space), unless the option I mentioned above is set to "No".

Also keep in mind, that other projects may need more RAM than Seti (I think, ClimatePrediction is really hungry regarding this).

Regards
Andy

FYI, I never have that option turned on. However, a 3rd reinstall of 5.4.11 seems, repeat seems to have made the problem go away..
Now back to checking why my SETI crunch have slowed to a crawl, some confusion out here..then the video cards, the Direct Xs, mumble mumble sigh and Rgds

I'm using BES (Battle Encoder Shirase 1.2 for Windows 2000/XP) to reduce the CPU usages. Seems to be working fine so far.

No... when I tell you it takes all my CPU then trust me it does... Though it's been a little bit since if checked if there was an updated BOINC...

But you should trust us, there's no technical way BOINC can take all your CPU cycles without releasing some to your programs. It runs at lowest priority and therefore it's impossible to take it all without giving your apps higher priority.

Is it possible that another program is conflicting with BOINC/SETI making it appear as if your computer is running sluggish?

As for the updated BOINC, your Pentium M is still using BOINC v5.2.7, with the current version being 5.4.11 and the new release due (hopefully) within the next week or two. The new version will be the one that supports CPU throttling.
