As far as I know, account managers will always be optional.

BOINC should work equally as well with and without an account manager.

So, may it be inferred from your response that the future is in BOINC account managers of some kind, with less reliance on BOINC itself as a front-end?

Will users be able to continue use of BOINC without an account manager?

While it is technically possible to have a project list on http://boinc.berkeley.edu/, who is going to maintsain it? How do new projects get added to the list? What happens if one of those projects turn out to be bogus?

It is a very slippery slope. BOINC doesn't want to play favorites amongst the projects, the current project list is a stop gap measure until there are enough account managers that projects are easy to find.

Rom, I noticed on your website you touched on an idea I had (I don't know if it was my suggestion you were referring to or simply multiple people with the same idea, but it's irrelevent) about having BOINC provide a check-box list of projects to connect to with an easier Attach to Project Wizard, and you stated that you wanted BOINC to be server independant, which would create a problem as to how one would download a new list of projects without a centralized server model.

My questions are, isn't there a central BOINC server already? Doesn't it reside with the SETI@Home servers? What about http://boinc.berkeley.edu? Couldn't that have a simple stored list of projects that the BOINC client could download updated lists from? Couldn't there be a hard-coded list of projects already preset in the BOINC client, with an option to manually type in a URL if your project isn't listed?

Sorry if this wasn't the place to ask questions, as I could not find an area to do so on your website.

Very informative today Rom. Thank you. I think its a great idea. I might suggest making this some sort of link on the BOINC main website, and maybe making a sticky thread here so people can find it easier.

In an effort to improve communication between the BOINC project and the community about the future of the BOINC project I'll be holding a weekly Q&A on my blog.

I'm fielding this as an experiment right now, as a way to find out the kinds of things the community is interested in knowning.

If there is a lot of interest in this sort of thing maybe the guys who publish bunc will be willing to pick it up as part of their newsletter.

What do you all think?
