Yes, all is back to normal without any Optimized Applications. I guess I am just old school and like the screen graphics. |

After I set up my rebuilt CyberPower subordinate computer (after 54 days of downtime) I first set up the default Seticruncher. Then I went to Simon, the Chicken of Angnor's site and downloaded his cruncher folder (appropriate for Pentium D950s). On seeing it was in a temporary file I tranferred the whole folder to the BOINC..../berkeley.edu folder, turned off Boinc, put the default numbercruncher executable into the recycle bin, opened up Simon's folder, put all the files onto the desktop and transferred Simon's files individually from the desktop into the ...berkeley.edu folder. Instead of the TV-like default cruncher, there is a devillike (or maybe alienlike) icon signifying that Simon's cruncher is in the correct folder. Instead of getting the multicolored graph tray which signifies the slow default cruncher, I see the Boinc icon hopping around the screen every two seconds like a frightened cricket, with progress readouts for the current workunit of each core. Now I'm crunching almost twice as fast as the default with Simon's cruncher on the subordinate as well as the main computer. |

try to reset the project should fix the problem.
Mr. Nelson, please accept my apology again for giving you incorrect advice. I didn't mean to cause you extra work. Next time, I'll have to test it a bit more on my own crunchers before I send you off in the wrong direction. So sorry.
Not a problem, I kinda new better then tring this in the first place. Rule number one in programming is never screw around with someone else's code unless you have read it and tested it first. I just thought with all the talk lately about Op. Apps. that I might give it a try again. Some people may like them, some don't...personal choice I guess. I just want to get back to the Original Boinc/Seti and let it run its happy little graphics as it pleases.... <EDIT> I have reset the project and also found several Dreamweaver files in my Boinc folder which I have deleted. Seti now back to normal and running with graphics. Thanks for all the help and advice from everyone, but I think I will stay with the 'Original' software package for now...graphics and all. |

Alrighty then, now I am in a mess it looks like. I deleted what I thought I was told, rebooted, and this is what I got after it dumped all of the work in my cashe and downloaded new work. I have since run the repair function again, and no luck. All of the work I have now states that it is stuck in the 'downloading' for status.
try to reset the project should fix the problem.

The easiest way to disable the optimized app is just to shut down Boinc, go into the Seti projects file, and rename the app_info.xml file so Boinc can't find it. Relaunch Boinc and you should be back where you started. If you change your mind at some point and want to crunch a bit faster, just shut down Boinc and rename the app_info.xml file back to it's correct name, relaunch Boinc, and you will be using the optimized app again. If you don't where to find the file, let me know and I can be more specific.
doesnt work boinc will continue to use the optomise app because it has the same name as the origional. have experenced this before need to delete the application also.
You are correct, sorry for my error and the incorrect advice. I had thought that because I did not see the 'using the anonymous platform' message, it was back to using the stock app. I was wrong. "Learn from yesterday. Live for today. Hope for tomorrow." [As msattler said this is normal behavor. one of the ways that the optomised app saves time in by not generating the pretty graphics. the other way is useing sse 1 2 or 3 instructions. thats why the test it runs to see which instructions works the best for your processor and then installs the best one. good luck and happy crunching.
That is all well and good, but how do I now go back to the original, I want the graphics to show. O.k., that does explain that one...but I don't like that. How do I go back to the original then. I have already downloaded and used the 'repair' function and it didn't fix this issue. I actually enjoy the graphics and so do my students when they watch my laptop run in the classroom. I have the graphics set to only run for five minutes anyways before going to a blank screen. Do I have to uninstall Boinc now or what to go back to the original?
it would be best to let your cach run out first by setting seti to no new work. after all the seti workunits have crunched and reported back then shut down Boinc. then go to the projects folder open the setiathome folder then delete both the app_info.xml and the setiathome_5.15 app. then restart boinc. it should download the standard app and then more work after you select allow new work. sorry you dont like not haveing the graphics but I can live without them robbiing cycles from my CPU. good luck.

I did these steps as you stated, and it did test and run/install the Op. App.. However after restarting my system and running Boinc/Seti, I now cannot use the Show Graphics command from the Boinc Manager. It still shows on the left taskbar of the page, but it is unhighlighted as if it is no longer an option. Any ideas on this one??? <EDIT> Now when the screen saver kicks in on its own after the set time, graphics are not displayed either, it just as a little icon and says "SETI Now at 56.35 % complete" as it bounces around the screen.
The screensaver/graphics behaviour you are seeing is normal for the optimized apps. As part of trying to optimize Seti crunching, the screensaver functions have been pared down to the minimum in these apps. Reason being, generating the pretty graphics for the regular screensaver uses a fair amount of cpu time, so you just get the bouncing Seti icon with the completed percentage of the wu currently being processed. This saves most of the cpu cycles for wu processing instead of painting pictures.
O.k., that does explain that one...but I don't like that. How do I go back to the original then. go to this site downloads and download the automatic installer Beta .I think the package needs to be unziped first. then exit Boinc by right clicking on the taskbar icon and click exit then run the package that you just downloaded. restart Boinc.copy the package over to your other computer and repeat these steps. O.k., I am willing to give this one more try. I have tried to run an Op. App. before and only ran into problems. So many people are telling me that I should run an Op. App., so here is what I am going to do...Here is my information on both of my machines, Home and Work. Both machines have the latest software package from the Seti/Boinc site. Can someone please tell me the simple step-by-step proceedures to install and run an Op. App. for both of my machines? go to this site downloads and download the automatic installer Beta .I think the package needs to be unziped first. then exit Boinc by right clicking on the taskbar icon and click exit then run the package that you just downloaded. restart Boinc.copy the package over to your other computer and repeat these steps.

Here is a vote against optimising. Once you optimise you have to keep it up to date manually. With the standard app you will download any new apps as needed. BOINC WIKI BOINCing since 2002/12/8 |
