News of this demotion has met with much dissent on the Disney Camp. People close to Pluto have reported halted negotiations with the network and a cessation of work on all future project looms in the horizon. We tried long and hard to get a statement from the demoted star (Planet really) but got nothing worthy of print. Of all the pictures we took during this interview this was the only one legal to print in this forum for obvious reasons.

Should any of my grand-nieces or nephews ask me how many planets there are in our solar system, I will answer without hesitation, there are nine. Who are these clearly confused scientists who deem a rock orbiting our Sun to be a planet, then less than a hundred years later, change it back to just another rock? If there are other objects in our solar system that may be planets based on the criteria originally used for Pluto, then let their advocates make the case, just as the advocates for Pluto did some 70+ years ago.

Oh . . . did those silly astronomers make a boo-boo with Pluto? Of course not! They made a reasoned decision, based on the definition they agreed on, that Pluto is a planet, and they should live with that decision until the planet leaves the orbit of the Sun or gets sucked into Neptune or otherwise no longer fits that definition. What has happened here is that nothing has changed about Pluto, but the definition of "planet" has been arbitrarily changed. What if some other condition were added, such as, a planet must have human life? Then there would be only one known planet in the universe, but that is not what common sense tells us about what a planet is.

Pluto is a planet, so if the definition of "planet" has to be modified, then make the definition fit what is there (as they already do now, given that the other eight planets are quite different from each other). And what happens when a similar rock is discovered orbiting another star, and some exotic form of life is found on that object? Will that not be a planet because of some arbitrary definition this year's crop of wishy-washy astronomers chose to apply?

One final thought: this is the same thinking that determined the multi-million dollar Hubble telescope should be abandoned in orbit because of a minor flaw in its optics. That flaw was finally fixed (and relatively cheaply) after a public outcry over the waste and concern for the science forced the issue. What can we SETI crunchers do?

BTW, as I have images shown as links, I didn't pay much attention to the pic in your post, but luckily for you, Pluto's hand (sorry, paw) is blurred out! People here have been banned for less than that.

Just like there are Gas Giant Plannets (Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus), and terestrial planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars) there are now dwarf planets (Ceres, Pluto, and Xena) for a total of 12 planets. The problem is that any definition of planet that included Pluto also had to include Ceres and Xena as well. Ceres is the largest of the asteroids, and Xena is a Kuiper Belt object. Pluto is the innermost of the known Kuiper Belt objects.

The definition of a planet is that gravity has made it round, and it orbits the sun rather than another planet.

I wonder what will happen if we ever discover a pair of objects the same size that would otherwise fit the definition of planet but are orbiting each other.

Don't forget "dwarf planet" Charon, (to make that number 12), which "orbits Pluto"...

Yes, I wondered about Charon in the discussion about planet/not planet, as Charon is rather a moon, I'd say...

I personally don't give a cr$p what they call Pluto, or any other rock out there.

It means nothing. It's just a name, a classification.

Pluto is still Pluto...even if it's called a Planet, or a Dwarf Planet or a "Hunk Of Smelly Methane". It changes nothing.
