3 : to put an end to by satisfying : APPEASE, QUENCH <assuaging his thirst>

- as·suage·ment /-m&nt/ noun

From Merriam Webster's Online Dictionary.

Thank you for the clarification Special Agent Mulder. I actually had to look the word up in my dictionary when it popped into my head. I wanted to make sure it's definition fit the profile, err, I mean what I was trying to say.

Sorry I missed your post last night. I'm still trying to get used to this browser Opera. It relies to heavily on cache and I'll miss posts. Just now, I decided to turn caching off. My connection and computers are fast enough that caching is no longer needed.

How's Special Agent Skully these days....? (-:<

Thanks nobody. Yeah, I missed Mulder's post down there. It's this damned caching in Opera. I just turned caching off. His isn't the first post I have missed seeing, I have missed many since switching to Opera. It relies to heavily on caching. Thanks again nobody.... (-:<

Welcome back and if you need help with that over heating box, holler.

Thanks Mike. Believe it or not, I have 13 fans trying to cool that box. My power supply has 2, I added 2 case fans, one screwed to the case, the other fits into an expansion slot. I have a dual fan cooler installed in an expansion slot that blows directly on my video card. I have a dual fan cooler on my hard drive. I have a 3 fan cooler that draws cool air in from the front, in a 5 1/4 inch drive bay. Then there's the CPU fan. Plus I took a CPU heatsink/fan, that I broke a locking tab off of, extended the power leads, dabbed on a touch of Arctic Silver and placed it on top of the box just above the power supply. Without BOINC running, the CPU still runs at 65° to 70° C. It will hit 80° C with BOINC running, but usually hovers between 70° to 78° C. If I take a house fan and point it at the box, I can get the temp down to 64° C, where it's at right now. When the day warms up, so will that temp.

I have been toying with the idea of getting a small piece of dry ice and placing it inside the bottom of the box just to see how that would do. I would have to put the side panel back on for that to be somewhat effective. That box does run cooler with the side panel off, believe it or not.... (-:<

[edit] Now that I think about it, that CPU is the same one that I had in the old mother board. There, I don't remember it getting over 65° C with BOINC running. I'm now wondering if the sensors may not be reporting correctly. Although, the box did get so hot, above the power supply, that I couldn't hold my hand on it for more than a few seconds, before I placed the CPU heatsink/fan there.... [/edit]

Sounds like it's likely the sensor...Your CPU would soon fry if were actually that hot with all those fans blowing.

Welcome back Siran. Yer mug was missed around here.

Thanks Jim. It's good to be back home again. Home being SETI that is. Although, I did see a few posts, in a different thread, that were made right after I started posting again, and the have me disturbed. Posts like that was one of the underlying reasons why I went on my self-imposed ban. I will just wait and see how things pan out. Thanks again Jim.... (-:<

Thanks Mike. I really hope things are going well for you. I was keeping up on all the bad things happening to people here. Hospital stays and such.... I believe that Jim-S is/was going through some bad times and CA isn't faring to well right now, I guess. I just hope the future turns out bright for everyone. Thanks again.... (-:<

HEY SIRAN!!!!

HEY DOC!!!!

How are you doing, my friend? How're your fish? Ok I hope. I missed being here, but I wanted to prove something to myself. One of the things I wanted to prove was that I have self-control. I beat down every temptation to reply to posts here. Actually, I almost made one post, but decided against it. It was to pass on some info to someone here. Anyway, it's good to be back and I believe I need to go to DS-9 to bring back some more Romulan Ale from Quark.... (-:<

I'm not sure about that Dan. I just felt the top of the box, above the power supply, next to the heatsink/fan, and the box is actually cool to the touch. And yet the CPU temp is still just above 60° C. In the other mother board, it would average about 56° to 58° C with BOINC running and only a few fans installed. With all the fans I have now, you'd think the temp would be way down below where it was in the old mother board. Maybe it could be the sensors. I don't know. I'm going to wait to see what Mike may have to say about it, when he gets on line that is.... (-:<

Silly question: Did you use thermal paste between CPU and heatsink?
Another silly question: Is the tower perhaps too small?
Yet another silly question: Is there sufficient ventilation to let the hot air OUT? (Even with lots of fans, restricted exhaust can still cause overheating.)
More silly questions: Can you fit a bigger heat sink?

Question #1: Yep, a little dab'll do ya....
Question #2: It's a mid-tower with lots of room....
Question #3: I have space between each box and use a house fan to circulate the air around them....
Question #4: There is room, but my thinking is that a bigger heatsink would increase air flow obstruction.

What's up with computer component manufacturers? I got a 450W power supply today and replced the 430W I had in the box. It has this big honkin' fan, almost 5 inches. After putting the box back together and hooking up all my stuff to it, I switched it on and the fan looks like a Christmas tree with flashing colored lights. It's actually kind of cool, but why? What's the point of all the lights inside a computer box....? (-:<
