I'm still trying to figure out why some think that finding ET would bring God's Holy Books to a crashing halt... We don't know how or when God created the Earth, nor do we know much about what took place for 18 or so billion years, nor do we know what else God decided to create out there in the Heavens...

Even if ET told me there was no God, I wouldn't just take their word for it either... That would be quite foolish... ;)

As I see it, it says in the bible that god created man in HIS image. What's to say he didn't create anything else in other images, and if you believe we are the only planet in the whole universe with ANY life (inteligent or otherwise) those people have a very narrow veiw on the universe.

This is my opinion anyway.

I wonder how strong the desire of some people would be to proselytize to the poor unsuspecting aliens. :-)

A small post on the subject of religion, if I may.

You'd think someone preaching the word would have actually READ the bible...

It may not be 1984 but George Orwell sure did see the future . . .

A small post on the subject of religion, if I may.

Creating more religion is one possibility...or if it swings the other way, obsoleting them.

Religious folk get to reevaluate the beliefs the held for true ( creationists come to mind ) and move on. Idealy they would keep living their lives according to the righteaous principles set forth by their religious values ( good stuff, really ) and do away with the medieval superstitions that are currently vehiculated with them.

Complete reevaluation of organised human spirituality, if you will.
How people will deal with it at the personnal level is a matter of how each and every person understands and lives his/her spirituality.

This post is a personnal opinion. Please. Do not view it as flames towards any creed, person(s) or anywhatway it could be interpreted as offensive, as it is not intended so.

This is all I had to say on the religious aspect of the proposed question of this thread. Delving deeper into it would be off topic I think.

Rock on

The impact on religions finding out they are not the only living creatures, and they come from a non Sol/Earth place will cause consternation

The only way finding alien life will make us forget about our cultural differences is if those aliens are attempting to snuff out the entire human race.

....and even then, I wouldn't trust some zealot who thinks he's going to heaven for killing someone of a different religion or ethnic background, or someone who would condemn a man to hell for the same reason.

I disagree with the first part only because I agree with the second...I think enough Radicals would convince enough that the end is near...Either way it sure would make things very interesting. It would probably end up creating more Religions...scary thought.

I run seti and hope we can find proof of ET, even though we can't get there, as I believe it will unite the World...Instead of being white or black or Jew or Arab...maybe we will be thinking more in the way of Earthlings. One can only hope.
