Robert Brooke likes this abridged version too.

What do the rest of you guys think? Would you like us to start using the abridged version, or should we stick with the extended algebraic?

The abridged is quicker to write, the extended is easier to follow...

Which do you prefer?

Personally, I prefer the abridged notation ; I feel it less heavy ; but I'll use the unabridged one so that all readers can understand what we're talking about.

Maybe sone non-chess players could get interested in the game then ..? :)

Ahhh! Well, you've "hit the nail on the head" as we say here in Canada! That's exactly why I've gone for the longer unabridged version. And I think you're right, non-chessplayers would find the abridged version very difficult to follow indeed.

I'll give time for others to weigh in on this, but frankly, given the voting so far and your reason quoted above, I'm still inclined to keep the unabridged version going. I haven't made a final decision though, and I remain open to persuasion. :-)

Have a look at my solution, Ingleside. I think that moves 1,2,and 3 are all forced because of mating threats on the 8th rank. Perhaps give an example of a Black's move 1. that would have a different result, and I'll try to respond to that?

1. QxB (threatens RxR mate)...RxR+
2. RxR (threatens Rd8++) ...g7xQ
3. Rd8+ ...Kg7 (forced)
4. Nf5+ ...Kg6 (forced)
5. R-g8+ ...Kh5 (forced)
6. g2-g4++

Well, let's 1st. type-out your solution in long notation, just to make sure I've not doing something wrong in the deciphering of your moves...

1; Qf3xf6, Rd8xd1+
2; Ra1xd1, g7xf6
3; Rd1xd8+, Kg8-g7 (forced)
4; Ne3-f5+, Kg7-g6 (forced)
5; Rd8-g8+, Kg6-h5 (forced)
6; g2-g4 mate.

So, let's break your 3rd. move...
3; Rd1xd8+
3a; Kg8-g7 => as listed as your 4th move onward.
3b; Re6-e8 => oh sorry, 3rd. black move isn't forced afterall...
4; Rd8xe8+, Kg8-g7 (forced)
5; Ne3-f5+, Kg7-g6 (forced)
6; Re8-g8+, Kg6-h5 (forced)
7; g2-g4 mate.

So, if I'm not seeing a Black Rook at e6 that in reality isn't there, I think I just broke your mate-in-6...

As for taking another 1st. black move, that about... Rd8-f8, how will you now solve this?

Well, I grudging concede that it's a mate in 7 (due to the flaw in the problem), but the same chess ideas still apply, and the mate is exactly the same. (Except for the useless interposition of the Rook Re6-e8, which is promptly captured.)

So, I plead the "Robert's Rule of Order", (pun intended) namely: that since the final mate is on the same square and by the same piece, it shouldn't make any difference! LOL

Well, let's see how my solution of "Artillery Badge" would look in short notation...

1; Tg3+, Kh7
2; Dxg6+, Kh8
3; Txh5+, Txh5
4; Dxh5+, Dh6
5; Dxh6++

Easy to follow, right? :)

Adding to the mix, how many times is it I've put an A for one of the pieces, or called the Knight for K, or mixed-up Knight and Bishop or... Also, Champ is calling the Horse for H so...

Using long algebraic on the other hand, even if you do make a mistake in whatever you're calling the piece, most will understand that 1; Cf3-g3+ is you've moved the Castle from f3 to g3, and is checking the black King...

So, my preference is definitely for long algebraic.

Thank you, thank you, thank you ! (bowing) :)

Earlier, I had a conversation with Robert about the cupies. If I've understood, a fair count of them is made by winner ?

How many do I have now ?

:)

P.S. : Tomorrow and the day after, I'm working ... ;)))

Well, I know you have two hattricks, so that's 6 right there. I think you have a couple that weren't part of that, so my guess is that you have 8 Cupies by now, but you'd have to go through the thread and check. I've asked for volunteers to keep track of the Cupie "Standings" but no luck, so far. ;)

Thank you,

Eight cupies, sound quite correct, but I won't scroll down the thread to see if it is.

Eight cups in three days ... I begin tu understand Robert's concerns ! ... LOL

Sorry ...

The Lite Lunch Special is called "Closing the Door".

Enjoy!

White to Move and Mate in two.

1. Qa3f8+ ; Re8xf8
2. Nf5e7 ++

:)

That's right. ;) and to complete your solution: What if, instead of 1. ...Re8xf8, Black moves Kg8xQf8?

After that :

2. Rh1h8 ++

of course ... :)

Ding! Ding! Ding!

We have a winner!

And another HATTRICK for Anne!

Give the lady a Cupie doll, with tinfoil beanie on top.

Congratulations, Anne!

Well done!

Shall I post a new problem ? :)

White to move ; mate in 6. :)

Take your time ; I'm too tired to try to solve it right now. :)

Well, I got close to the solution but didn't find it eventually ! :(

So I looked up for it and here it is :

This position stems from the blitz game Dvoretsky - Rafalsky, played in 1967 in Moscow. The not so difficult solution is:

1.Qxf6 Rxd1
2.Rxd1 gxf6
3.Rd8+ Kg7
4.Nf5+ Kg6 5.
Rg8+ Kh5
6.g4 mate

You're a champ if you found it ! Congratulations ! :)

I still don't see the mate in 6, since blacks 1st., 2nd., and 3rd. move can be different... :confused:
