[ Well, I got close to the solution but didn't find it eventually ! :(

So I looked up for it and here it is :

This position stems from the blitz game Dvoretsky - Rafalsky, played in 1967 in Moscow. The not so difficult solution is:

1.Qxf6 Rxd1
2.Rxd1 gxf6
3.Rd8+ Kg7
4.Nf5+ Kg6 5.
Rg8+ Kh5
6.g4 mate

You're a champ if you found it ! Congratulations ! :)

Heyas Anne!

I think I'm a champ! heheheh

Last night I posted this:

1. QxB (threatens RxR mate)...RxR+
2. RxR (threatens Rd8++) ...g7xQ
3. Rd8+ ...Kg7 (forced)
4. Nf5+ ...Kg6 (forced)
5. R-g8+ ...Kh5 (forced)
6. g2-g4++

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=32662&nowrap=true#384371

I think that's the same solution you've posted here. ;)

What do you think?

Not only does it look pretty much the same solution, but IT IS the same solution !

Congratulations ! :)

[quote]

I see ! It's the way I write the moves that troubles you ! Sorry ...

1. (white move) ; (black move)

That's how you must read them.

Sorry again ! :)

Dear Anne,
you need not say sorry. But i cant follow you. When you are writing f6, what do you mean? Move to which place?

Dear Champ,

It's an abridged system of notation. It consist of writing only where the pawn, piece arrives :

1. f6 ; e5

means :

1. white pawn f5-f6 ; black pawn e6-e5

etc.

Is that clearer ? :)

Yes madame. Sorry for stupid asking. lol
Now i can follow you. ;-)))

Noooo, it was not stupid ! :)

I find this notation system so practical, once you know the code, that I use it and never wonder if it's understandable for all.

As you may have noticed, I've changed my ways ... :)

The Late Night Boogie Woogie is called "What a Difference a Knight Makes".

Enjoy!

White to Move and Mate in three.

Well, in case Champ haven't solved it correctly, let's see...

1; Nc3-d5+
Ke7-e6 (forced)
2; Qf3-g4+
f7-f5 (forced)
3; Qg4xf5 mate

Checks Champ's solution... Oh, so close, but last black's move is invalid...

No, no the black's move is not invalid. When a pawn moves for the first time, it can do that. :)

Hmm, maybe wasn't clear, I meant to say that Champ's last black move isn't legal, and therefore the 3rd. white move in his solution isn't the right move. ;)

My solution on the other hand AFAIK doesn't have any errors...

Hello ! :)

1. f6 ; e5
2. Nh6 ; e4
3. Nf7 ++

??? Strange moves!!!! Could you explain? From my side, these moves are impossible. Or i am so wrong?

Hi champ,

You must be working on another problem. :)

I dont think so. You will solve the Queening Chances.
There is no move from f6 to e5.

How's this?

1. QxB (threatens RxR mate)...RxR+
2. RxR (threatens Rd8++) ...g7xQ
3. Rd8+ ...Kg7 (forced)
4. Nf5+ ...Kg6 (forced)
5. R-g8+ ...Kh5 (forced)
6. g2-g4++

#3 black... => Re6-e8...

Meaning, you needs 7 moves to mate, and this again means problem not solved...

Anyway, maybe it's something wrong with the picture, but I don't see any possible forced mates in 6 moves...

Yes, getting a mate isn't a problem if black does something stupid:
1; Qf3xf6
Re6xf6
2; Rd1-d8 mate

But, if black chooses something else, there is the mate?

How this?:

Bf4-Bg5+
f7-f6
Hc3-Hd5+
Ke7-Ke6
Qf3-Qg3++

OOOH! A really nice try, Champ. I think you have some of the right ideas, but in the wrong order. If you "allow" f7-f6, you create an escape square for the Black King on f7. That's why your mate doesn't work. Instead of 2. ...Ke7-Ke6, Black would move 2. ....Ke7-f7, which spoils the mate in three. ;)

A very nice try though. Consider some of your same ideas in a different order. ;)

Like this?:

Hc3-Hd5+
Ke7-Ke6
Qf3-Qg4+
Ke6-Kf6
Bf4-Bg5++
