Go to Robert Brook's thread, or mine for that matter, and hit "Reply" as if you were going to answer to that post. At the bottom you'll see the text of Robert's correct solution. The fine print is achieved by using (size=1)(/size) tags (but with square brackets, not the round ones shown here). That's the way we prefer solution attempts here. That way, if you get the right answer, you won't spoil it for someone else trying the problem. ;) |

To see a solution that someone (me, in this case) hit the 'reply to post' button because we use BBCode to type our answers in small print so as to not spoil the solution for others who still want to noodle it out on their own. The Late Night Special is called "Every Pawn Will Have His Day". Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner! Give the man a Cupie doll. Congratulations, Robert! Well done! No FSM dolls available, sorry. You'll have to take this up with Bobby Henderson, founder of the Church. |

Yep, it's a mate in two alright, and a clever one. You'll have to think a bit more on this one. Still not working. :( Any more ideas, post on Beethoven's VI, okay? Tx. |

Welcome to the new Chess Cafe! The Late Night Special is called "Every Pawn Will Have His Day". I may have had this one up a long time ago and I think Chris solved it, but it's pretty nifty. So here we go with it again. Can anyone other than Chris solve it? (Heheheh). Enjoy! White to Move and Mate in two. A Guide to Chess Notation: With algabraic notation, it doesn't matter which side you're playing, the letters and numbers are constant for both sides. Here's a typical Ruy Lopez opening in English Descriptive notation: 1.P-K4 P-K4 2.N-KB3 N-QB3 3.B-QN5 P-QR3 4.BxN and here's the same game in English algebraic: 1. e2-e4 e7-e5 2. Ng1-Nf3 Nb8-Nc6 3. Bf1-Bb5 a7-a6 4. Bb5xNc6 and here's the same game in English (short) algebraic: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. BxN Common Symbols also used: x for takes or captures + for Check ++ for Checkmate ep for en passant pawn capture /N for underpromotion to a Knight instead of a Queen, for example ! a particularly good move ? a particularly bad move !? a doubtful move |
