Hi everyone,

I am new to SETI and would like to say hello to everyone and also ask a question. What exactly is the credit for? Why do i need credit? I am not trying to sound like a moron but when it comes to understanding all this SETI stuff alone I am. Please enlighten me.

Welcome, I will let someone else explain credits. It is a race to the top for some...I want to find ET but if not at least I can have fun competing against other computers. I overclock so I am always trying to squeeze that last bit of power out of this machine and seti helps me see the difference in real time. I am sure everyone has their own reasons...

Hello James, welcome to .

Here you can read all about the BOINC credit system, which SETI@home uses.

Well it is nice to know what is up. I look forward to hearing from you guys more in the future. Have any interesting things or abnormalities been found?

Credits are a measure of the number of calculations your computer makes in order to get the results from the analysis of workunits. Faster computers get more credit per hour because they calculate faster. Each unit of credit is called a "cobblestone". Unfortunately the present system is not too accurate yet. Each machine should calculate the same number of units per hour provided it's totally devoted to Boinc projects, but credits earned vary more than 2-to-1 due to inconsistencies in the analyses of workunits.

Welcome -

Credits are not worth anything of value, only used for competition. They display the amount of work that you have completed.

Welcome aboard, James :)

Basically others have told you already what the credits are for ;) Which is the friendly competition between participants and teams. Thee are stats sites out there, like boincstats.com, that provide quite extensive statistical views on ones progress.

Credits can also be used to determine if there's a problem with your host(s) and/or the science app and/or the server side programs - but not always ;)

Hi James,

And welcome to the wonderful world of SETI and BOINC. One thing that hasn't been said about the credits is that they give you bragging rights.... (-;<

Hey Bruno, I'm glad you got you server back up. The BOS I have on my site was wreaking havoc with the back button somehow. Things are fine now. Thanks.... (-:<

Kevint, you should consider changing your stats graphic to the banner style since you have so many projects.

Yeah, I really hate when it's down, even when it's just for a few minutes. Unfortunately a re-boot is sometimes manditory. I look forward to the day I can run this computer as a dedicated web server machine ;) Or perhabs an even better one :D
