Windows 2k is run on the NTFS(NT File System) as opposed to the FAT32/FAT16 file system which 98 & ME run on. Also, Windows 2k is supposedly a mainstay in corporate computing and servers.

98's, and by extension ME's, kernal is ancient and creaky. You know there is a problem when they are still releasing critical security patches 8-10 years after the initial release.

The universe is a pretty big place. It's bigger than anything anyone has ever dreamed of before. So if it's just us... seems like an awful waste of space. Right?

Rather say that ME is of ancient lineage - there are some parts that have not been changed since windows version 1.0.

There's some parts that are very old indeed, very likely still in there, and not even written by Microsoft!

See:
Microsoft, TCP/IP, Open Source, and Licensing
Reverse engineering the Windows TCP stack

In brief, there's very likely still some BSD unix code inside the networking software for all Windows right up to the present day. There's an article somewhere out on the web where one of the original BSD programmers had to abandon his email address because of the phenomenal amount of spam and MS-virus mail that was using his address that was lifted from the credits in the code on all the Microsoft systems...

All good fun...

Regards,
Martin
