How do I get it to not open up a window on my desktop on Windows startup? I have BIONC in Start-Programs-Startup. And that's only way I can get it to automatically star up with Windows. Any ideas? Thanks.

Edit the properties for the shortcut and add a "/s" in the "Target" field. For example mine would look like this:

"C:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\boincmgr.exe" /s

The property of the shortcut in your Startup folder should have the target with a space /s to tell Boinc to start in the tray.

boincmgr.exe /s

Also, if you install BOINC as a service, BOINC Manager doesn't have to startup at all with Windows. You only need to open it occasionally when you want to make changes or check on progress.

That's just something to consider for future installs. I run mine as a service and everything is completely invisible :)

Thanks. How do I install it as a service instead of what I got now?
I'll definitely try that /s thing even though I think someone already suggested that and it didn't work, but I'm not sure. Will try it now.

to install as a service after single/shared install do the following:

1) Exit Boinc not just the manager with "file" "exit" (not just the red X)

2) use windows ADD/REMOVE programs to remove Boinc. Fear not no work will be lost.

3) run the Boinc installer again, this time picking "service" install. If you don't want the manager to start up, then "UNcheck" the box labelled "load boinc at start up".

4)NOTE: You'll need to have the systems Admin password available when installing as service.

hope this helps

Good instructions there from Tony.

And when you have finished the service install, you can place a shortcut to BOINC Manager on your desktop or wherever you want to keep it handy. BOINC will run invisibly in the background every time you start your computer, and you can run BOINC Manager only when you want to.

ok, great. thanks to both of you. but if I install it as a service will it automatically connect to the server sending and receiving files and everything else that it's supposed to do?
this makes me wonder: why isn't BIONC installed as a service by default?

I don’t know what they developers were thinking, but some possibilities come to mind: it requires administrator privileges that some users may not have; some admins may want to restrict it to a ‘sandbox’, or leave its use to the individual discretion of multiple users of the system; and others still may want to use BOINC as a screensaver.

Because you can also install BOINC on Windows 95/98/SE/ME machines. These OSes don't have that option.

Wouldn’t it be possible for the installer to detect the OS it was running under, and run with a particular set of defaults for that system?

Yes, it's actually doing that. On Win98 systems you won't have the option to install as a service.

Of course, the need for an administrator account with password could also be a hurdle for all those people running XP on admin accounts without a password. I am still wondering what use that is. ;-)

LukaD,

Yes, BOINC will continue to perform exactly like it always has for you. It'll upload and download according to your settings, and you can open BOINC Manager at any time and change preferences, update your projects, attach to new projects, everything you have always done in the past. The only difference is that the BOINC executable will be loaded in the background at startup as a service. This achieves your goal of keeping BOINC Manager hidden. In fact it won't be running at all unless you want it to.

I hope that explains it better :)

If I install it as a service, how do I shut it down (whenever I need to)?

Quickest way is to type 'net stop boinc' in the run dialog box. To start it back up type 'net start boinc'. You can also go through services.msc as Ageless suggested.
