A fun result from the site: Try an iron projectile at 17 m/s and a 60 degree angle onto sedimentary rock. With a diameter of 6,177,000m it will melt almost-- but not quite-- the entire planet. If you are standing 12,429 miles away from the impact you'll be in the "safe" spot. The Earth won't be melted under you, but you'll suffer thru a magnitude 15.7 earthquake and be engulfed in a fireball for a little over a year. And by the way, Lex Luthor owns that bit of real estate and will be charging you rent :-) No animals were harmed in the making of the above post... much.

I was playing with the program, and noticed that at 2 miles away as I increased the size of my rock from 39 to 40 ft, the impact went from knocking down the house to not being felt. Is this because I am dead?? May be a bug fix Duncan |

\\ something that might interest somebody "Welcome to the Earth Impact Effects Program: an easy-to-use, interactive web site for estimating the regional environmental consequences of an impact on Earth. This program will estimate the ejecta distribution, ground shaking, atmospheric blast wave, and thermal effects of an impact as well as the size of the crater produced." "Please enter values in the boxes below to describe your impact event of choice and your distance away. Then click "Calculate Effects" to learn about the environmental consequences."
