Giving the Finger Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English soldiers. Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw the renowned English longbow and therefore they would be incapable of fighting in the future. This famous weapon was made of the native English Yew tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as "plucking the yew" (or "pluck yew"). Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset and began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying, "See, we can still pluck yew! PLUCK YEW!" Over the years some 'folk etymologies' have grown up around this symbolic gesture. Since 'pluck yew' is rather difficult to say (like "pleasant mother pheasant plucker," which is who you had to go to for the feathers used on the arrows for the longbow), the difficult consonant cluster at the beginning has gradually changed to a labiodental fricative 'F', and thus the words often used in conjunction with the one-finger-salute are mistakenly thought to have something to do with an intimate encounter. It is also because of the pheasant feathers on the arrows that the symbolic gesture is known as "giving the bird." |

I found this surprising... Did you know the first vending machine was invented by Hero of Alexandria around 215 BC. Whenever a coin was dropped into a slot, its weight would pull a cork out of a spigot and the machine would dispense a trickle of water. I wonder how long it was until the first time a vending machine was kicked/hit for eating your money and not giving you the product... To truly explore, one must keep an open mind... |

Did you know.... In a study of 200,000 ostriches over a period of 80 years, no one reported a single case where an ostrich buried its head in the sand (or attempted to do so)

Did you know.... It takes glass one million years to decompose. White Tennesseans celebrated the victory over the British in the Revolutionary War. Now, Tennessee was a part of the new state of North Carolina . But people were always talking about breaking away and forming a state of their own, and in 1784 many living in Tennessee tried to do this by attempting to form a new state that they called Franklin . They named their new state after Benjamin Franklin in hopes that it might make the new national government more sympathetic to their cause. They also elected John Sevier, hero of the Battle of Kings Mountain, to be the first governor of the state of Franklin . However that state was never recognized by the government, so it didn’t become a real state. Today this unsuccessful attempt at statehood is known as the Lost State of Franklin.
