Good idea, actually.

I think I'll spawn a new thread for that (not a Part 3 of this one).

Oh yeah, for anybody who's interested:

Windows optimized clients were downloaded 540 times in 16 hours of being online and linked. They've just caught up with the Linux clients ;)

I had counted on around 300 downloads in the first 24 hours. Guess again.

Regards,
Simon.

Everyone who would like to, feel free to link to my site - it should be able to cope with the traffic.

Happy crunching :o)

Hi Simon,

I'm running a seti app compiled with "-xW -DUSE_SSE3" on my Athlon64x2.
I don't know how this translates to the compiler flags for a windows build, though...

Regards Hans

Sounds interesting! Haven't tried that yet - does it yield better performance?
Worth a shot :o)

Would be a way to get an AMD-compatible SSE3 binary, in any case...I had been wondering how to do that. Good idea!

Also, I just checked out my referrer list - 65 sites already link there, wow!

Among them:

Anandtech Forums
PcPer Forums
SETI.USA *grin*
dslreports.com
forum.hardware.fr
marisan.nl
pperry.f2s.com

Thanks everyone for spreading the word!

Regards,
Simon.

It runs a bit faster on a P4. I didn't check if it's faster than SSE2 an the Athlon64, though...

Simon,

Congratulations on releasing your Windows builds. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors, as I fully understand the hard work you invested in producing them. I can confirm Hans Dorn's suggestion w/regards to SSE3 for AMD on Windows. Invoke QxW and USE_SSE3. SSE3 is not much faster than SSE2, but every little bit helps :)

Regards, Daniel.

Thanks Daniel!

Yes, it seems to work just fine. I've released that client to my test community, waiting for results to come in.

No doubt

I am comparing Pent-M performance right now. The only app I have downloaded so far.

Kevin, it was all in good humour :o)

You're welcome to do anything you'd like, as the apps are released to the public.

I just stumbled across your team's URL in the referrers and couldn't resist.

If you're interested, we could share benchmark results - you can reach me at simon <squiggle> zadra.org.

Regards,
Simon.

Are you still working on releasing a new SSE3 for AMD? Are the results looking good?

Not really right now -

two reasons. Generic SSE3 is slow - way slower than generic SSE2. Also, since someone posted information about ICCPatch, I've tested what times I get using a patched ex-P4 only SSE2/3 on AMD systems. The SSE3 version is still a little bit slower than the SSE2, but they are both quicker than the generic counterparts.

However, I'm still researching the legal angle of this practice and have received a word of warning that these executables may not produce valid results (although my tests have) due to the register use being optimized specifically for Intel's products.

HTH,
Simon.

How do you patch the files? I found the program "intel_check_executable_patch" from the website you menioned, but it is not a executable file in Windows.

I know it was in good humour - I wanted to compare and I am sure you would be interested as well

I will share them - gotta find them first - I only ran a couple of WU's with your app, have not run any on this machine with SETI.USA app - the machine is on Rosetta right now, but I guess I can load it up with the SETI.USA app tonight and see what gives, would be intereting.
