Message 358267 - Posted: 5 Jul 2006, 22:27:42 UTC - in response to Message 358242.

Okay,

I just released test builds for Windows to a closed test community (thank you, I have enough testers for now).

Once I get back some test data, I'll post some stats about speed and compatibility.

It won't be too long, if there are no problems, apps will be released for public download this week - probably within 2-3 days, maybe sooner, maybe later. Have Patience, please!

The need to produce valid results is greater than the need for speed.

Regards,
Simon.

That's good news, and I agree that careful testing is the prime need at this point.

Are any of your testers running Win9X? The changes from 5.12 through 5.16 were mainly related to our problems on those systems. There were changes not only in the app code but also in the BOINC api, both Eric Korpela and Rom Walton making updates to boinc_api.C in rapid succession. I'm not seriously concerned since Tetsuji did a test build after those changes which ran OK on Win98. But my DevC++ builds of 5.16 and 5.17 give an error when trying to set up the timer thread on my Win98 system, though the builds run without problems on a Win2k laptop.

If I can be of help, contact me at jsegur at westelcom dot com.

I'll install a german translation so you can find stuff more easily. Maybe that will help.

I will switch your account for you when it's there.

Pepperammi, Sir Ulli, that's a message you get with the default client, too, so I'd safely ignore it.

It's not an error affecting anything.

Regards,
Simon.

P.S. Ulli, especially for you: http://www.zadra.org/seti_enhanced/index.php?action=post;topic=13.0 - click on this link and it will open a new post in the correct thread. Oh, and your profile is switched to german :o) Hope that helps in finding links.

Preliminary testing is looking good.

All results so far have validated (using rescmp) vs. the default 5.15.

So far, the gains have been variable depending on which CPU architecture exactly is used - there is even quite some variance between Prescotts and Smithfields, for example.

The only clients that did not run or produce valid results were ones optimized for an unsupported instruction set (like an SSE3 binary on an SSE2-capable machine), which is normal.

There will be several versions you can download -

SSE (P3/Athlon XP)
SSE2-generic (Athlon 64/Turion)
SSE2-P4 (P4-only)
SSE2-P-M (Pentium-M, Core Solo/Duo)
SSE3

You should find out what instruction sets your CPU supports by using something like CPU-Z before using any of them.

You could do that now, while you still have to wait :o)

Regards,
Simon.

Hi Simon. Seti apps compiled for P4/SSE3 are running fine on Core Solo/Duo

Um... Both my Coppermine P3's report by CPU-Z supporting SSE2, and happily ran SETI/Einstein aftermarket aps designated as SSE2, I think.

As Coppermine was one of the most widely sold P3's, perhaps your summary needs a bit of revision?

Trying to be helpful--not sassy. And let me add my thanks for your efforts.

I've so far read this thread with great interest and much respect for anyone trying to build an optimized application for S@h Enhanced!

Since we're all starting to wonder how big the speedup might be, I found this url=http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=83883658]result. There were 2 AMD Athlon 64 3500+ crunching and Chicken of Angor's app on his 3500+ finished valid in 12.800 seconds. The other 3500+ took 20.070 seconds which would make a speedup of 36% for the Chicken of Angor application! WOW! I don't know if his cpu is still stock, but I assume it is (at least for the test phase of the opt. app).

I'm aware that this is not a general number, but I found another url=http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=83902818]result where Chicken of Angor's P4 2,66Ghz dualcore outcrunched a normal 2,66Ghz P4 by half the time (12280 vs 24760 seconds). One might argue that this isn't an exact comparison, because of the one core, two core thing, but that was not my intention anyhow. Just some really rough numbers to see where we are. :)
