The Angle Range is how far through the stars the Seti apparatus moves during the 107-second period of a workunit. If the apparatus is stationary, which I think is usually the case, the stars drift by at 1/4 degree per minute, times the cosine of the declination of the spot at which the apparatus is looking. The declination can be anything from -1 degree to about 37 degrees because 19 degrees is the maximum amount that the Seti scope can tilt from vertical, and the latitude of the scope (near Arecibo, Puerto Rico), is about 18-1/4 degrees north. So with a stationary scope the stars brift by at about 0.36 to 0.45 degree in the 107-second period. That's probably why there are a lot of units with that angle range. For short-angle-range units somebody has to make the scope follow the stars by moving it. For long angle-range units someboby has to slew the scope. Since data collected from a single spot among the stars is of a different nature from that of a short or long streak, different studies must be made for each spot or streak to extract the most science (judged by the developers) from the workunit.

Why are they so rare???

The VHAR and VLAR units are rare because it requires the user of the telescope to be driving the gondola. Most of the time the gondola is stationary and therefore the ar is around the 0.42 area.

gondola?? "A lightweight narrow barge with ends that curve up into a point and often a small cabin in the middle, propelled with a single oar from the stern and used on the canals of Venice."??? (dictionary.com)

ROFL!!! Thanks Andy! Your the first and only person to make me laugh tonight.

... or is there another to meaning to "gondola" I'm missing and just not finding? :))
