Heya Dan, I've got a question for you. In areas like yours where thunderstorms are the norm in the late spring and during the summer...why haven't people installed lightning rods and/or why are they not a part of the building codes. They're very cheap, easy to have installed, and require no maintance?

Shocking indeed!

I've asked that question too...And i've heard that lightning rods are overrated as protection...possibly because they act as lightning attractors...bringing down bolts that otherwise might never have struck...They used to be visible on the roofs of many structures in these parts...But not anymore...

Most of the damage incurred at the radio station was a result of voltage that came in via a strike on a nearby light pole...At least that's what the theory is froom the station engineers...The same engineers will be installing better surge protectors at the station soon...The new surge protectors will be welcomed by me...Who sits plugged into to the control board while lightning flashes in the window.

I remember, when I was a kid living in Wisconsin, lightening rods were seen everywhere. I haven't been back for over a ¼ century, so I couldn't say if they're still there or not.... (-:<

In reality, lightning rods dissipate the potential charge, but if the charge leader is still attracted to it, it harmlessly takes the hit. Alot of larger buildings no longer have lightning rods on them because the very structure of the building is metal and grounded. Masonary and wood frame buildings still need protection as your neighbor found out when the lightning found the nearest grounded object...her stove.

Scary pics CR...We've had some nasty lightning storms in my area...And there have been several fires because of those storms...

Same here, we've had a lot of flooding on top of it.

It was 101 F here today. I'm surprised there aren't any big fires roaring out my way.

104F where I was.... )-:<

Only about 90F here - but about 100% humidity - yuck.

[edit]

I believe that I'll have a Trapist.

The humidity here made it feel like 120F.... )-:<

In California they name the fires...Who gets to choose the names for them?...And have they thought of selling the naming rights?

Typically it's given the name of the area/community/neighborhood it's started in.

So chances are you're not going to plunk down $50,000 to get them to name a fire after you.

I think the fine for arson is greater. That is if you only get the fine.

Then they could name the next fire after the arsonist of an earlier fire...

Of course if the fire is started because you burned the American flag will you get charged with anything?

It's kind of like Florida here in Southern Illinois this summer...Thunderstorms almost every day...We're paying for the mild, uneventful weather we had this past winter.
