Look at the URLs, they point to "seticlassic" -- those pages will not be updated because classic is over... If we'd just stop taking pot-shots at each other, and at the project, then spirits would improve dramatically.

Easy there, Ned

Perhaps you are experiencing some residual anxiety created by other recent threads because I really don't know where all that just came from. My post with the links was provided to show the type of information I used to enjoy seeing under Classic. I think we're all well aware that they will not update those, rather, provide new ones under BOINC.

I'll be the first to admit that the timing for this proposal might have been a bit bad, coming on the heels of so many other recent demands and negativity toward Berkeley. But in itself, I see this as nothing more than a peaceful request for some science updates. If it turns into anything more than that, or becomes a flamefest, I'll be the first to back away from it.

Perhaps we should disengage in this type of conversation altogether and simply allow folks to sign the petition if they want.

Not anxiety, but more disappointment.

I'm not being critical of you, Dig, but I think a big part of what we see is you say "this page hasn't been updated in a long time" and a reasonable person would take that as "SETI/BOINC needs a page like this" or some reasonable equivalent.

... not everyone is reasonable.

Reasonable statements like yours take on a life of their own all too often. It seems like a simple thing to just update a page, but we don't know how that page was generated (programmatically?) and even if the program works -- or how difficult it would be to "port" the program to BOINC.

I try to put a little extra time into each of my posts to avoid misinterpretation, but "we" (all of us in the fora) seem to be really good jumping to conclusions -- and given more than one interpretation, it seems that the darkest ones are the most popular.

I think that's where the old SETI@Home spirit went.

So, yeah, I'll agree, sign the petition or not as you see fit. The subject of the thread is to bring back the old spirit, and I think just being nice to each other will go a long way toward that.

Please accept my apologies if you took offense -- none was intended.

In case anyone missed it, this is the response from Matt Lebofsky to the sister thread posted in the Science forum:

Proposal to bring back the old SETI@Home spirit

I've been out of town for a while and therefore not posting news anywhere on the site. But basically: we have a new data recorder installed down at Arecibo as of a week or so ago, and SERENDIP IV (a different non-distributed Berkeley SETI project) wrapped up taking data (after ~7 years). SETI@home enhanced is released and churning on old data more thoroughly than before. We are desperately trying to work on all the above while also designing/implementing a real-time candidate generator. A newsletter about some of this is in the works.

- Matt

This is encouraging news I think. Thanks for the update Matt!
