I thought the new Seti application led to all hosts crunching a unit to request the exact same credit.

However, looking at my results, I have where requested credit isn't the same as granted credit? Does that mean something's wrong with my results?

We can't look at your account. Post a link to a WU instead.
Most likely what you see is caused by the use of an old BOINC client.
The older versions still use the crunching time to calculate credit.

The other two people are not using a client of 5.2.6 or newer, so it's still counting the old way. You benefited from this, some people actually have gotten less because of this.

Until SETI forces people get get 5.2.6 or newer, this will happen.

(edit)This is the result he is talking about.

I thought this was the one recently-created thread actually about number crunching and not the drama :)

Although my "happy" thread was removed by administrators. No joke.

"This thread has been hidden for administrative purposes"

Well, neat, I got 50 extra credits. Maybe I'll donate them to charity.

Don't tell tony! ;-)

Until Berkeley forces folks to update the BOINC Client, this will happen from time to time. Just be glad that you GOT the credit. It could just as well have been the reverse.

People say the Cafe is the worst for flamewars. Looking around I'd say not true. There are more small fires, thats true, but the NC is where the towering infernos take place.

Unfortunately they deleted my happy thread and not the dozen open flamewars.

My hypothesis? The title was sarcastically "A potential benefit for Cruncher's absense?" - maybe they wanted to delete that to coax Cruncher back.

Anything is possible. But I get the feeling he's making himself home at Einstein.

Since they deleted my thread, I'm going to boycott... pants.

It'll be an interesting day at work tomorrow.

And if they try and fire me I'll say it's a political statement.

This is nothing!

You should have seen the flame wars in the early 80's over which OS was the best!

And if you want to get into "nit picking", I remember 2 folks having a heated discussion over 10 vs 20ms accuracy in NTP.

Remember the early days of BOINC? I think that was worse, where we had people emailing the entire space sciences department at Berkeley complaining about Seti, and people claiming there was some big conspiracy because a few people got work units while other people didn't.

Actually there are MANY units - all varying widly from host to host.

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=80543766

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=80497554

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=80343833 Big change here!

etc. etc.

I think you’ll find all the discrepant claims come from BOINC clients earlier than 5.2.6 —I didn't look at all of them, but the ones I did see were all v4.x. It is fairly unusual to see more than one at a time in a given quorum, but it’s bound to happen occasionally.

I must say I’m pleased to see results pages like this one of mine: the claimed and granted columns are identical all the way down (at least they are as I post this). So while the ‘credit lottery’ situation may not quite be history yet, it’s on its way out.
