Second, if you are a true scientist body, you will continue the search with the true Boinc/Seti program and NOT TRY TO CHEAT and GET HUGE RESULTS.

Thirdly, if you are offended, fine...go away, go far away!!! This is a scientific adventure to try to prove a theory, if you are in it for the credit go do something else!!!

Lastly, I HAVE BEEN EDITED, REMOVED, AND CENCORED! As an American Citizen I feel totally Violated!!! This is supposed to be for regular people to help scientists to prove or disprove the existance of E.T.; What would Carl Sagen or others say about the behaviour lately?!?

I have stated in the past that the credit is screwed up from the original, to the Boinc, to the Boinc Enhanced...but DAMN the idiots who fight over this...can we please focus on the goal?????????

It helps the science when more results get in in shorter time, more science is done for the same cost.

O.k., now that I have had a night's sleep and calmed down, let me explain and apologize.

First, I am just sick and tired of all of the fighting, name calling, and crying about all of the issues that people who are not part of the SETI/BOINC Team cannot fix. Yes, there are alot of talented programmers, volunteers, and others who put time into this project other then just downloading workunits and uploading the results...to this I say thanks for helping out the cause. But seriously...everyone needs to stop creating thier own programs, enhancements, and 'this team/persons way of completing work units'...as we can all see it is just creating hurt feelings and problems. I personally feel that if you can just please download the official software from this site, and nothing else, then at least everyone should be on the same playing field.

Second, I apologize for how harsh my original posting in this section was. To be frank...I just got tired of hearing all of the secrets, whining, crying, and name calling. The last few days have sounded like a bunch of school children out on the playground going 'na nanna bo boo' and the like. This is one of the two things that set me off. I am a school teacher, and sillyness like this just triggers me to say 'knock if off'. I should have been more adult about my posting and not been so negative, so I apologize to everyone/anyone who was upset by my outburst.

Third, I too have been edited/censored in comments made on other subjects. Some of my posts have been removed without even asking me or telling me what was going on. To be honest, I didn't think that they were flame/troll comments, but just facts and opinions that I shared and others then attacked me, so I responded once to say that I was not going to continue on that issue anymore. In America we have a constitutional right to free speach, as long as it does not hurt anyone else. The censorship that I saw firsthand could have been handled a little differently I think. To just pick an entire section or comments and delete them without explaining, asking, discussing, warning the people involved is not fair, and I am glad to see that things are changing in this area by the forum staff/volunteers.

Lastly, and I know this is going to sound silly, but bear with me; Can we all just get along and follow what ever the BOINC/SETI Team wants us to do to complete this experiment? Seriously, it is THEIR work, THEIR time, THEIR equimpent, THEIR money. Yes, some of us have donated, as have I, and so we have a bit more interest that the average 'Joe'. Yes, we all crunch workunits which is time and expense (computer equipment/power/etc.), but we agreed to be volunteers...that word means to help someone with THEIR work. It does not mean to be nasty, bossy, spread rumors, change things, or alter the work...it means help. I too have stated that I think the credit system is flawed, but not because of the low amounts of credits for long times now since the upgrade, but for other reasons (see other posts), but I have decided that it is not my call. I asked questions, presented my views, and now I have to accept the way things are being done since I am not employed, asked to volunteer with the project's leadership, or own the project. I simply do what is asked of me...download the software and workunits, process the work, and report the results...as far as I am aware, that is all they want us to do unless specifically asked otherwise.

In closing, I would just like to say one thing. Can someone please find a signal and prove that life does exist outside of this little blue planet? Maybe then we can all focus on something other then all of this arguing?

SETI@home is open source. The source code is available in several ways:

Compiling and testing

You can compile SETI@home for new platforms, or (if you know what you're doing) compile it or revise it to run faster on an existing platform. In either case, you'll need to know about BOINC's anonymous platform mechanism.

So, if people like chrunch3r do so and try to help and make things faster, why shouldn´t he?

Of course, there were and are several mistakes in the coding, but why condemn all about it?
Even Berkeley makes mistakes it´s the nature of trying and programming. That´s why versions are changing and being reviewde again and again.

I believe that Crunch3r's optomized applications are and were a good idea. The only problem that I saw was that 5.11 optomized was claiming more than the official version, and should have been pulled. Tony asked that it be pulled (unfortunately, maybe not as nicely as was possible). And then the egos of everyone went wild.

We all need some calm.

My belief is that there is some right and some wrong on all sides of the issue of the optomized applications. Everyone needs to realize this, calm down and stop with the overheated discussion.

Sterling. you make a lot of good points but it is apparent that you do not understand what an optimized app is. I too could care less about the credits but I do like to see the numbers increase because it tells me that I am submitting valid results.

Crunch3r's 5.11 app was intended for use on the seti beta site only and people where told that. It was even stated on his site if I can remember correctly. It was also on a seperate page from the 5.12 app. But it is/was not the end of the world because that app still produced the same results as the apps that came after it. And the quorum would have thrown out the high claim anyway. And the validater makes sure the work is correct before granting credit too.

Think of the goals of the project first and formost!!!

Optimization of the app is a good thing for us and the project. It gets more science done in the same time span - good for the project. Also an optimized app is good for the environment because it gets the work done using less energy - good for us and the air we breath.

And Sandtiger you can stop calling people names. It does not matter if a person has a rac of 2 or 2,000,000, we all contribute to this project in what ever way we can. I could call you names too for not helping to test the new app at the beta test site but that would be childish. While you and those who think like you were greedily going after credits I was losing credits testing the beta app, but I did it because it needed doing so that you and the rest of us here would have an app to run. I'm also helping with some alpha projects because that needs doing. I feel better about myself when I don't put my needs first but think of others and what I can do for them!

And don't ask me why there are errors in the app, I don't know. These errors that we are now seeing with the enhanced app did not appear during testing. I guess that is another reason why we needed more testers because not all computer/hardware combinations were being represented by the few testers that we had. And I ask, who is at fault for that. You (collective you) may have been the one that could have kept this from happening even if you only did just a few work units for the beta site.

Thank you for your kind words. As alot of people have noticed, some of us (including myself) are just trying to stay off the boards for now until things calm down. I know I didn't help matters with some of what I posted, but I was tired of the arguements, lies, censorship, and name calling. I think it is time for everyone to just take a step back, take a deep breath, and move on. Change affects many people many different ways...the only sure thing about change is it will effect everyone and it sometimes causes different affects.
