Which reminds me of a little story about Coca Cola and baseball. In 1992, the year the Toronto Blue Jays won the World Series: on the very next morning... If you went to the convenience store to buy a can of Coke, it was specially (and georgeously) painted with a silver "Toronto Blue Jays World Series Champions" theme, instead of the usual red Classic Coca Cola theme. The company must have done tens of thousands of these cans for each of the two competitor cities to cover the possibility of either team winning. That impressed me as a fine example of American salesmanship, organization and know-how.

it strikes me as a waste of resources. coca cola maybe able to afford it, but the earth can't.

May I treat you with a fresh german beer, and the invitation to read either this thread @Science or simply go straight to the Proposal to bring back the old SETI@Home spirit.

Prost!

Is there a baseball team called the Poughkeepsie Yankees?

Just wondering..................

No...I couldn't find evidence of such a team...But if there were...They'd have to go a long way to spend as much money on players as the New York Yankees do.

Beethoven, 'Detroit Red Sox' ? Say what? lol...you mean Boston right?

DOH! Yes, you're right on that. I was also posting on another thread about Detroit's murder rate. I was swinging with the wrong thread! lol

Half a season of Roger Clemens will cost the Houston Astros in excess of $12 million dollars...It's a huge risk they are taking...Clemens will be 44 in August...This could be the year he finally grows old.

The USA spends all it's money making sure Roger Clemens can pitch for the Houston Astros for half a season.

Ahh. Poor Roger, though. If only he'd stayed a couple more seasons with his Detroit Red Sox, he'd have his World Series ring, finally.

Which reminds me of a little story about Coca Cola and baseball. In 1992, the year the Toronto Blue Jays won the World Series: on the very next morning... Either that or they rigged the game. (Rigging the game would probably be cheaper)

Um...no, they didn't, Es. That hasn't happened in baseball since 1919, when the Chicago White Sox threw the World Series...the only time it's ever happened. ;)

I've got some 'Shoeless Joe Jackson' baseball cards.....(modern of course)...

He was innocent and hails from my home state.

England did not win - Paraguay beat Paraguay......

LOL Didn't Napoleon say he liked generals who were lucky? I'll bet the Brit fans were happy and won't look a gift horse in the mouth.

At least England didn't beat England, so the win is fair and square.

This is a fine place to sit and drink and not watch your country's team lose in the World Cup.

I'm looking away from the big screen...I won't look as the USA team goes down in flames again.

England did a nice job so far, with their first win. I've always been a little surprised that with all its money, the US can't field a better team.
