I guess I'm not seeing what other people are seeing. Can someone tell me why Cruncher suddenly decided to call it quits?

Some unkind remarks were made in some deleted threads, which cast his motivations and integrity in an unfavorable light (wrongfully, and inappropriately worded IMHO).

But as you well know Matt, that's nothing new for these forums! ;-)

I think that Berkeley should be happy that a large majority of their users don't come to these boards. If they did, I don't think they would have the number of people particpating that they do today.

The way Crunch3r (and others) have been treated is wrong. Period. I didn't know Paul Buck, but from readying his farewell posts, it appears that he believed that what was wrong with this project (and the people involved) was not going to change. Since then, I've come to believe that he was right.

Unforunately nothing is being done to correct these issues and many of the people "in power" are the very ones causing many of the problems.

Well stated!

-I’ am pissed behave of Crunch3r's good work not getting the credit he supposed to.
Next week all my seti computers (20) are on NO NEW WORK , until he gets a APOLOGY from all people on this forum that got him pissed of and seti administrators.
-A second reason is I got 5 work units yesterday, about 45 hours work/units on my AMD Opteron 165 computer. I have got only 5/20 optimized computers. Sucks.
-Until we get back our 4 hour Crunch units!

Until we meet again................... ( SETI@home enhanced, sucks, as now)

And some in the team I'm from do share some of crunch3r's opinion on some of those here that were critical of crunch3r, One guy didn't mind being called a credit whore, Me I didn't like being tarred as such as that hurt, I do like the credits as I can then compete(What else do I have to do? I'm disabled and I It keeps Me going as surfing, emails, forums and TV only goes so far. But that is cause work is extremely difficult for Me both physically or mentally[If I spelled this right at all I'm lucky]). Is the science that important to Me that It becomes the only thing acceptable? No, As having crunched the data I leave the science where It belongs in more capable hands than My own and that is victory enough for Me. As I have enough to worry about without giving Me an anxiety attack or make Me dwell on It on and off for 2 days....

Is there an alternative???..

Maybe someone should come up with a new app for finding a client thats optimized as well as those that crunch3r kindly gave us..Or alternatively, a client for locating the person responsible for him leaving seti, and poke them in the eyes?

I admire Crunch3r's work on the original optimisation, but for the enhanced version, I am not so sure, I get the impression, due to the very quick releases after the offical releases on Beta and here, that the graphics parts have been removed and it has been compiled with the Intel program for specific cpu's. A tool not avaialable to the Developers at Berkeley because of its high cost.

And TMR is alive and kicking on the Beta site.

So far I know, was the most optimistations at the enhanced done by Eric, TMR and Joseph. But some ideas from the old 4.x optimised which was done from TMR, Joseph, Hans and Crunchr (and others ??) was adapted in the Enhanced.
And so far i know, has crunchr only compiled the Enhanced with the Intel compilers.

This really pisses me off! I'm thinking about dropping my support for SETI. I've been crunching since 1999 and crap like this has to stop. Too many great people have left SETI due to some childish ignorant people that need to be terminated from the project. People like Crunch3r and trux have kept the spark alive in a lot of people that otherwise would have gone elsewhere. There is no doubt that the science is the main objective, however you have to understand that competition is what drives the heavy hitters out there. When teams were started they introduced the competition aspect of the project. Teams are for one thing and that competition, it's a fact. Everyone tweaks their systems to get the most out of them as they can and a part of that tweaking was optimizing their systems to use their CPU's to their fullest. Crunch3r I hope you will return later and I hope you get the apologies you deserve.

Something Seems to have gone seriously wrong here at seti. Not just this latest shock of Chunch3r being driven away but also everything that led up to putting things in the mess they are now.

I'd just like to point people to have a look throught the Einstien fourum and see how a very valuable (and much valued by all of us who appriciate his work) person should really be treated.

I talk of course about askos (sorry I think I spelt that wrong). When his optimised einstien app hit the fourum the project operators actualy showed thanks for his great work, started talking about how to impliment it in the standard app straight away, Even started a few threads of their own telling all the membera about it, giving advice and even gave askos a thread of his own to add links to his latset app versions so noone had to look far. He's even been given press publicity for his work.

Compare that whats going on here. Great many don't even know that the enhanced seti came about because of all the optimized work of many members. I don't remember seeing anywhere they where given credit for the enhanced. Some are now getting chased away.

I'm joining in now for this boycot because I agree this project is going south fast but I must say it can't all be blamed on the project runners or moderators ect. It isn't the project joined to start with and to repeat words of i don't know who - Its getting more difficult to discover intelligent life on THIS PLANET

Fred - this is very well stated, and I agree with you 100%! A boycott has been talked about, and maybe it needs to happen now. I would dedicate the boycott to Crunch3r personally. I am ready to protest in whatever way I can and for however long I can. It's real easy to do - just close BOINC Manager or go to other projects. I'm ready. Our team has the highest production currently, and most of our forum members seem to be ready as well. Any other teams or individuals with us on this?

I think everyone who uses Crunch's app (or just thinks he has been wronged) should join the boycott. As soon as I get home from work, I'm stopping all new work.

I will not process again until things have been made right for Crunch.

CHECK THIS THREAD OUT
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=30606#323049

I've read all the threads I could locate and still have no idea what happened... anyone who has a somewhat unbiased view able to summerize it for those of us who missed the hoopla.

Thanx, Skip

If it is the one I am thinking about, Crunch was accused of cheating because one of his machines claimed something like 60 credits.
